Finalists for Sigma Delta Pi’s 12th Annual S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year Program

The College of Charleston’s and The Citadel’s chapters of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, are proud to announce the finalists for their 12th annual South Carolina Spanish Teacher of the Year Award for 2016:

Loyda McClellan of Fort Dorchester High School
Stephanie Schenck of Clover High School
Kathleen Stafford of Irmo High School

All three finalists will receive award plaques courtesy of the College of Charleston’s and The Citadel’s chapters of Sigma Delta Pi, and each finalist and their guests (one guest per finalist) will enjoy complimentary lodging the evening of November 10, 2016 and breakfast on November 11 courtesy of the Francis Marion Hotel in historic downtown Charleston.

Dr. Del Mastro Presents in “State of Publishing Today” at 2016 MIFLC

Professor Mark P. Del Mastro organized, chaired and presented in the academic panel “The State of Publishing Today” during the 66th Annual Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Conference (MIFLC) at  James Madison University on October 15, 2016.  Dr. Del Mastro is past president of MIFLC and current member of the MIFLC Executive Committee.

Dr. Emily S. Beck Co-Founds South Carolina Medievalists Group

Along with Dr. Caroline Dunn of Clemson University, Professor Emily S. Beck has co-founded the South Carolina Medievalists Group, an informal body of professional scholars of all disciplines – faculty and students alike – based in South Carolina. The group meeting provides the opportunity for medievalists and premodernists to connect with other researchers throughout our state and engage in informal conversations about current academic approaches and the state of medieval research and teaching in South Carolina. We welcome professionals in any area or discipline relating to medieval or premodern studies, as well as those engaged in interdisciplinary and pedagogical approaches.

The current group includes researchers in a broad range of academic disciplines. For more information, or to join the email list send a message to: scmedievalists@gmail.com.

The inaugural group meeting will be held in Clemson, SC on September 24, 2016.

Dr. Sarah Owens Presents Scholarship & Receives Award

Professor Sarah Owens presented her original work, “Spanish Nuns on the Manila Galleon (1621) at the Sixteenth Century Society Conference in Bruges, Belgium on Friday August 19, 2016.

The Society for the Study of Early Modern Women selected her article “Crossing Mexico (1620-1621): Franciscan Nuns and Their Journey to the Philippines” for the award for best article in women and gender in 2015.

Dr. Martha Maus Participates in the University of Salamanca’s International Conference of Spanish

Professor Martha Maus participated in the 4th Annual International Conference of Spanish at the University of Salamanca, Spain from July 3-16 with a grant from the Junta de Castilla y León.  At the same conference, she also completed a course administered specifically for professors of Spanish.
