Following last year’s successful dance concert, this year’s unbound: unearthed showcases the ever-increasing talents of the dance program at the College of Charleston’s School of the Arts. This diverse performance is centered on the ideas of physical, personal and artistic freedoms that reside within each artist. Unbound: unearthed features faculty, guest artist, and select student choreography, including works presented at the 2010 American College Dance Festival. The concert is comprised of nine separate pieces, and includes In Small Packages by guest artist Kristin Fieseler, Director of Annex Dance Company, and a restaging of Jules Perrot’s famous Pas de Quatre, which debuted in 1845.
“Providing the students with the opportunity to work with Ms. Fieseler was certainly a high point in preparing for this concert,” states Gretchen McLaine, Artistic Director of the concert and Assistant Professor of Dance. Fieseler and two additional members of Annex were artists in residence for the first week of the spring semester, teaching classes, setting choreography, and interacting with the students.
In addition to Fieseler’s piece, the concert will include ballet and modern choreography from College of Charleston dance faculty Eliza Ingle, Robert Ivey, and Ashley Stock. McLaine will contribute two pieces to the concert, and talented students Sara Bennett, Julie Delizza, and Lindsay Taylor will also present their original dance compositions. The cast will include over 30 dancers, many who are minors in the dance program. McLaine says, “The dancers have been very focused on providing a great follow-up to last year’s successful show. The caliber of our student talent seems to be ever-increasing and I am very proud of what they are doing. ”
Unbound: unearthed-A Dance Concert is part of the department of theatre’s season and will run Saturday, March 20 through Monday, March 22 in the Emmett Robinson Theatre in the Simons Center for the Arts, 54 St. Philip St. Curtain times will be 8 p.m. on Saturday and Monday, and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the box office or by calling (843) 953-5604. Tickets are $15 for the general public and $10 for College of Charleston students, faculty, staff, and senior citizens 60 and older. There will be a Talkback session with the choreographers and crew on opening night, March 20, following the performance.
