AWAKEN FOR THE ARTS – A NIGHT OF OPERA AND BROADWAY CLASSICS BENEFITING THE COLLEGE OF CHARLESTON SCHOOL OF THE ARTS

Celebrate the first night of spring with glorious music! On March 20, 2012 vocal superstars, tenor Rodrick Dixon and soprano Alfreda Burke, will share their operatic and Broadway talent to benefit the College of Charleston School of the Arts in a fundraiser Awaken for the Arts.

The diverse repertoire offers much for lovers of both music and theatre, with a performance ranging from the quintessential works of Puccini and Verdi to the finger-snapping showtunes of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Andrew Lloyd Webber and others. The night will include some local flavor in a revival of popular songs from Dubose Heyward and Ira Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. Acclaimed music faculty from the College will join Dixon and Burke on stage throughout the evening.

The event will take place on Tuesday, March 20 at 7 p.m., in the historic Dock Street Theatre, 135 Church St. $40 general admission or $150 preferred seating and reception with the artists, sponsored by Halls Chophouse. Attendees will return home whistling “It’s De-Lovely!” from Red, Hot & Blue! and “Tonight” from West Side Story. For inquiries regarding sponsorships or tickets please call (843) 953-6527.

Prior to the event SCETV will offer a preview of the vocal gifts of Dixon and Burke during a special airing of Hallelujah Broadway on Saturday, March 3 at 5 p.m. The show was originally recorded in Central Prague for American Public Television in 2010 (EMI/Manhattan Records). It is a feast of inspired vocal performances set in the Baroque magnificence of the Cathedral of St. Simon and St. Jude, home to the Prague Symphony. In addition to Dixon and Burke, the show features the marvelous Irish Tenor Anthony Kearns, as wells as a special guest, one of Broadway’s leading ladies – Linda Eder. The DVD/CD was released Sept. 14, 2010.
