The School of the Arts at the College of Charleston announces the 21st season of the International Piano Series. Season tickets for all five concerts are $80 and individual tickets are $20. College of Charleston students and those under 18 years old are admitted free of charge. The first two concerts will take place in the College of Charleston Sottile Theatre, 44 George St. The next three concerts will be at Memminger Auditorium, 56 Beaufain St.

Winner of the first prize in the 1987 Naumburg International Piano Competition at Carnegie Hall, Johannesburg native Anton Nel enjoys a remarkable and multifaceted career that has taken him throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and South Africa. His many accolades include performances with the symphonies of Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Detroit, and London, and appearances at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum, Queen Elizabeth and Wigmore Halls in London, the Ravinia Festival, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, and the Aspen and Blossom Music Festivals.

In collaboration with the South Carolina Music Teachers Association 50th Anniversary Conference, we will feature the host of today’s most popular classical music radio show, National Public Radio’s From The Top. Winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, as well as the Leeds, Van Cliburn, Busoni and Montreal international competitions, O’Riley has toured with groups such as the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields and the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and soloed with the Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Baltimore and Detroit Symphony Orchestras.
FREDERIC CHIU – USA • Tuesday, February 8, 2011, 8 p.m.
Chinese-American pianist Chiu has performed throughout North America, Europe, and Asia, with appearances at Place des Arts in Montreal, the Ambassador Theatre in Pasadena, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, the Mostly Mozart Festival in New York, the Newport Music Festival, and Beijing Central Conservatory. He has been the recipient of the Petscheck Award of the Juilliard School, the American Pianists Association Fellowship, and the 1996 Avery Fisher Career Grant. He has performed with the BBC Concert Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Kansas City Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Hartford Symphony, Orchestre de Bretagne of France, China National Symphony, and Taipei National Symphony.
JOSÉ FEGHALI – Brazil • Tuesday, March 1, 2011, 8 p.m.
Gold Medalist and winner of the Chamber Music prize at the Seventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, José Feghali has been Artist-in-Residence at TCU’s School of Music in Fort Worth since 1990. He has appeared in over 1000 performances worldwide, including appearances with the Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw of Amsterdam, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Gewandhaus of Leipzig, Royal Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, London Symphony, Birmingham Symphony, National Symphony of Spain, Warsaw Philharmonic, and the Shanghai and Beijing symphonies. He has appeared in all the major US cities and in virtually every state of the nation, including performances with the orchestras of Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, Detroit, Atlanta, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and the National Symphony.
ERIC CLARK – USA • Tuesday, April 5, 2011, 8 p.m.
A recent graduate of Carnegie Mellon University as a full scholarship student of Sergey Schepkin and Enrique Graf, Eric Clark has performed throughout the US including places like New York’s Carnegie Hall, Pittsburgh’ Carnegie Music Hall, Cleveland’s Severance Hall, and in Europe in Perugia and Montecastello di Vibio in Italy and at the Ahaus Castle in Germany. He has received awards from the Music Teachers National Association, the Steinway Society of Western Pennsylvania, the Carnegie Mellon Concerto Competition and the Silverman Chamber Music Competition.
