Make a Date With Charleston Music Fest on Valentine’s Day
to Enjoy a Special HeartStrings Concert
HeartStrings on February 14, will kick off the fourth season of the College of Charleston’s School of the Arts chamber music series, Charleston Music Fest. HeartStrings is a special concert in support of scholarships for the college’s string students. This will also be the first public concert in the Great Room (#234) of the new Marion and Wayland H. Cato Jr. Center for the Arts. It will feature internationally-acclaimed artists Lee-Chin Siow (violin) and Natalia Khoma (cello) with the college’s most accomplished string students, who will “play their hearts out.” The special program will include Handel’s Sonata for Two Cellos and Harpsichord, Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins in B minor and Piazzolla’s Verano Porteno for Violin, Cello and Piano. Also appearing will be award-winning pianist Enrique Graf and his protégé Sean Kennard. Julia Harlow (harpsichord) will perform, as well.
The Fest’s co-founder, Lee-Chin Siow, who is also Director of Strings and Professor of Violin at the college explained that helping aspiring young musicians follow their hearts and do what they love is what HeartStrings is all about. “This is a very meaningful concert to showcase and support our talented young musicians who are making a positive impact in Charleston and beyond,” says Siow.
“Our students come from America and all over the world from Cuba to China,” she adds. “They have one thing in common, talent and the desire to make a difference with music. Many of them would not have been able to pursue their dreams to study music without a scholarship, and they are truly grateful for their blessings. They are actively giving back to the community, right here in Charleston. One from Uruguay has started an orchestra for Charleston kids with no musical background and others give back by performing regularly in retirement homes and hospitals.”
