Final Letter

Dear Students:

This year has truly been a special one for the College of Charleston.  We welcomed a new leader, President P. George Benson, and celebrated the 40^th anniversary of the desegregation of our college.  On a broader scale, our community acknowledged the Bicentennial of the Abolishment of the Slave Trade and raised awareness about poverty worldwide through the ONE Campaign.

Our students have accomplished great things and have shown on numerous occasions that we are not so laid back, that we just might fall over (as the oft-quoted phrase from a college admissions book says).  Within a few short months, students raised over $160,000 through three projects alone – Project Harambee to construct an orphanage in Kenya, Dance Marathon to raise money for MUSC Children’s Hospital, and the Habitat Blitz Build to give a deserving family a home. 

In addition, we have seen an increase of school spirit on our campus as part of the Cougar Spirit Initiative.  Our college community has embraced our traditions, improved relationships with our neighbors, and supported our athletic programs.  The Spirit Panel, consisting of faculty, staff, and students, and a Homecoming Committee were established to ensure that school spirit continues to flourish for years to come.  The College also launched a Strategic Planning Steering Committee to assist with the formation of a new strategic plan that will guide the College of Charleston into the future.

Finally, the Student Government Association itself celebrated its 85^th year at the College of Charleston, and in honor of that anniversary, the top 85 ways that the SGA served the students in 2007-2008 is listed below.  It has been a pleasure and an honor serving you as your Student Body President.  I hope that you will continue to actively involve yourself with campus life and embrace the community and traditions that make the College of Charleston so special.
