College of Charleston Declared a ONE Campus
Student Government Passes & President Signs Bill Showing Support for ONE
Charleston, S.C. – The College of Charleston Student Government Association, today, passed a resolution declaring the college a ONE Campus. The purpose of the declaration is “For the Student Body to show its support of the ONE Campaign, an international campaign to end the AIDS epidemic, poverty, and starvation in all corner of the global community.” Immediately after passage, COC President George Benson signed the bill officially designating the College as a ONE Campus.
The goal of ONE Campuses is to drive students to become aware and informed and to inspire them to become leaders who engage their peers in the movement against extreme global poverty and health issues. Through this process ONE will grow into a large and active group of college students and quickly seed campus-based chapters around the country.
“College campuses are a fundamental ingredient in the ONE campaign’s success,” said SGA Senior Senator. “Students are very eager to do what we can to help raise awareness about worldwide epidemics and poverty. I’m proud that the College of Charleston is taking this step.”
As a ONE campus, members of the ONE Vote ’08 campaign will build websites, host meetings and make use of information tables, endorsements and campus events. This is the third campus to declare as a ONE Campus. Clemson University and Claflin University are also ONE Campuses.
The official text of the bill is as follows:
A Bill Presented by Senator Russ Richardson and Chairperson Alex Eichler of the College of Charleston Student Government Association On this Eighteenth Day of September, 2007
Purpose: For the Student Body to show its support of the ONE Campaign, an international campaign to end the AIDS epidemic, poverty, and starvation in all corner of the global community.
Whereas: Healthy people and healthy communities are the centerpiece of any strong and vibrant society; and
Whereas: American citizens from the College of Charleston are among the most generous people in the world; and
Whereas: ONE billion people live on less than $1 a day; and
Whereas: ONE: The Campaign to Make Poverty History, is a new effort by Americans to rally Americans – ONE by ONE – to fight the emergency of global AIDS and extreme poverty; and
Whereas: a pact directing additional resources for basic needs – education, health, clean water, food and care for orphans – would transform the futures and hopes of an entire generation in the poorest countries; and
Whereas: ONE is an unprecedented non-partisan American movement and part of a fast growing global movement to make poverty history;
Therefore: Be it resolved that the College of Charleston campus be a
CAMPUS of ONE, a college campus that recognizes the devastation of extreme poverty and global AIDS and the impact that it has made around the world. The Student Body of the College of Charleston supports the efforts of the ONE campaign and encourages other collegiate and non-collegiate communities to do the same.
