Alum Jake Kozmor Shares His Story
by Lacey Jackson ’29
Jake Kozmor ’23, a College of Charleston alum and founder of Charleston-based video production company Koz Films, recently joined the Intentional AI and Storytelling class for a fireside chat that gave students a behind-the-scenes look at his path from student to creative entrepreneur. Kozmor’s conversation offered insights into how passion, persistence, and adaptability shape a career in media and storytelling.
Kozmor, who earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in Entrepreneurship from the College of Charleston, began exploring video and film at a young age. He fell in love with video editing in fifth grade and by seventh grade was creating content with a GoPro camera. In high school, he joined a film club, laying the foundation for his future work in the industry.
From the moment he stepped on campus at Charleston, Kozmor said he was focused on building his portfolio. Early work included short films, hospitality promotionals, and commercial projects. Over time, he shifted his focus toward larger commercial, corporate, and reality television projects, work that now defines his professional portfolio with Koz Films, which produces a range of brand storytelling and marketing videos.
Throughout the discussion, Kozmor offered practical guidance rooted in his own experiences. One key takeaway came when he encouraged students to stay true to their interests. “If you have the passion, the skill set will follow,” he said, underscoring the importance of passion as a driver of professional growth.
Kozmor also emphasized the value of authenticity and genuine connection in both creative work and professional relationships. He shared how his willingness to experiment, collaborate, and remain genuine throughout his time at the College of Charleston helped him create opportunities and grow his career after graduation.
Kozmor’s visit offered students a relatable example of how curiosity and commitment can evolve into a meaningful creative career, reminding them that staying authentic and passionate can open doors after graduation.
