Calcagno and co-authors develop a net entrepreneurship index in new working paper
Professor Pete Calcagno and co-authors Justin Callis and Gary Wagner have released a new working paper with the Archbridge Institute, expanding on Baumol’s (1996) foundational theory of entrepreneurship and institutions. Their research builds on Sobel’s (2008) influential study, which tested Baumol’s hypothesis by measuring productive and unproductive entrepreneurship at the state level.
This new paper takes the analysis further by developing a net entrepreneurship index at the metropolitan statistical area (MSA) level, covering the years 2002-2019. The research provides a more detailed look at how different entrepreneurial activities correlate with economic outcomes such as income per capita and employment rates.
