ΓΝΩΘΙ ΣΑΥΤΟΝ

“Know Thyself”

This ancient Greek maxim was famously inscribed at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. It encourages self-awareness and understanding one’s own nature, limitations, and potential.

This phrase has been interpreted in various ways throughout history, from knowing one’s place in society to understanding one’s soul and inner self. It’s a timeless reminder of the importance of self-reflection and personal growth.

This phrase is also inscribed on Porters Lodge, and it was a topic at one of our recent strategic framework listening sessions. Not the Greek, but the concept. The idea shows up in two places. First, in our proposed mission:

We leverage the Charleston region and our liberal arts heritage to develop business leaders who understand the purpose of business and ourselves in an impactful, innovative, and engaging environment. This is accomplished through rigorous academic programs, relevant research, and meaningful professional engagement, which lead to extraordinary impact.

We excel at helping our community not just learn about business but also understand themselves better. From Impact X, where students learn how to make a profit while making a difference, to our new Life Design lab, study abroad, internships, specialty programs, Career Circles … you get the idea. There’s a long list of ways we learn about ourselves.

In addition, it is in our first proposed value:

Together, We…

  • Pursue Purpose: We work towards our shared purpose while encouraging each

other to explore and celebrate our unique qualities.

Yes, as a School, we have a shared purpose to teach, research, and serve. However, one of the extraordinary things about higher education, notably the College, is our ability to do that while developing as unique individuals. That’s not something you find at many organizations. As grandfather to Lydia, my purpose now is different than it was just a year ago. I am thankful that you allow me to live in that purpose, and I enjoy helping you live in yours (see the second value – Invest in Relationships).

It is such a simple phrase yet a powerful concept.

YOU make a difference.

Ponder this with me …
