AACSB Continuous Improvement Review: Publication Quality
On Thursday and Friday of next week (April 18-19), the chair of our AACSB continuous improvement review (CIR) team will be on campus. In our office we have been working feverishly to get the documents together for his review. It is incredibly rewarding work, and I am humbled by the good work you do in teaching, research, and service. Over the next few months, I plan to share a tidbit from the report every week.
Here is one summary chart of publications in Peer Reviewed Journals produced by our faculty gathered from the Faculty Activity System. We are working hard on our end to organize the data and make sure it is complete. We will also present this information by “disciplione”, and by “AACSB Classication” (there’s more below on that).

Here is how you can help make sure we capture all your data.
- Make sure your publications and conference presentations from the past five years are recorded in the Faculty Activity System.
- Include all the same components that you would on your CV.
- Be sure to select the AACSB category for the publication. In FAS, in the form for “Publication”, it is the 4th box down. Your options are: a) Basic or Discovery Scholarship, b) Applied or Integrated/Application Scholarship, or c) Teaching and Learning Scholarship. I have a cheatsheet for you below, in case you need it.
- Enter all of your Conference and major OICs from the past 5 years, and also check AACSB category there, too.

Basic or Discovery Scholarship contributions generate and communicate new knowledge and understanding and/or development of new methods. Contributions in this category are normally intended to impact the theory or knowledge of business.
Applied or Integration/Application Scholarship contributions synthesize new understandings or interpretations of knowledge or technology; develop new technologies, processes, tools, or uses; and/or refine, develop, or advance new methods based on existing knowledge. Contributions in this category are normally intended to impact the practice of business.
Teaching and Learning Scholarship contributions develop and advance new understandings, insights, and teaching content and methods that impact learning behavior. Contributions in this category are normally intended to impact the teaching of business.
