Charleston School of Business Faculty & Staff Updates

Beyond CHS

Greetings from Austin, Texas. I am currently at The University of Texas as a part of the Charleston Metro Chamber’s Metro Leadership Visit. It’s a jampacked couple of days, but I am spending time with Charleston business leaders and learning more about the great things happening in Austin. Austin is a city that Charleston can learn from, UT is a school we can learn from, and I am thankful for their willingness to share.

We have great things happening at the Charleston School of Business, but getting the chance to see things from a different perspective and to interact with colleagues with similar, but different, issues stimulates ideas. It’s easy to be consumed by the stuff happening at Charleston.  There’s a lot. But we all need to grow our networks and learn how we can make an even more significant impact. We must look beyond ourselves, our institution and our city to gain perspective. I need to be intentional about connecting beyond campus and developing my network. To see things from a new perspective. Do you need to do the same? Remember, it’s about working smarter, not harder.

While UT is different than the College, we can learn a lot from them, and we are both focused on preparing our students for the future. You might recall seeing an Inside Higher Education article about how the University of Texas System Bets Big on Microcredentials. You can learn more about their work at Texas Credentials for the Future.

Coursera

Speaking of Coursera, if you tuned into Tuesday’s Town Hall, you heard Provost Austin talk about our new relationship with Coursera and its Career Academy. What an excellent resource for us and our students. We can all get industry certifications for companies such as Google, IBM, Meta, Salesforce, etc. Coursera has been a topic of conversation at AACSB conferences for over a decade, and they continue to innovate and evolve. If you have ideas on how you might be able to incorporate their offerings in your class, reach out. We can probably find some funding to assist you with your efforts.

Another benefit of getting beyond Charleston is that it gives me a greater appreciation for the excellent things already happening in Charleston and the bright future ahead.

YOU make a difference.

Ponder this …
