Perplexity Comet, Academic Integrity, and Respondus LockDown Browser

By Debby Marindin, EdD, Educational Practices and Innovation

This post discusses vulnerabilities in assessment tools and AI usage. Please avoid sharing this content outside CofC channels.

What is Perplexity Comet?
Perplexity Comet is an AI-powered web browser that combines large language models like GPT-5, Claude 4, and Gemini Pro into a single browsing tool. Unlike Chrome or Safari, Comet doesn’t just display webpages — it acts like a conversational assistant. Users can:

  • Ask questions about a page and get instant summaries.
  • Automate tasks like drafting emails or organizing schedules.
  • Receive answers with citations directly inside the browser.

Why this matters in education:
During testing, Comet was able to complete an unprotected OAKS quiz in seconds. If a quiz is not secured by Respondus LockDown Browser, Comet can read questions, generate answers, and submit responses instantly. This represents a serious academic integrity risk.

Risks for Educators

  • Unprotected quizzes are vulnerable. AI browsers can bypass them easily.
  • Learning outcomes may be undermined. Students could shortcut assessments instead of demonstrating real understanding.
  • Policies and safeguards must evolve. AI use is now part of the testing environment.

Recommendations

  1. Use Respondus LockDown Browser (or similar tools)
  • Require it for all graded quizzes and exams.
  • Consider webcam monitoring for high-stakes tests.
  1. Redesign assessments with AI in mind
  • Use randomized question banks and shuffle answer orders.
  • Include applied, reflective, or scenario-based questions that are harder for AI to complete.
  1. Update AI policies and communication
  • Clearly explain when AI use is acceptable vs. prohibited.
  • Require disclosure of AI assistance in coursework.
  1. Build student AI literacy
  • Teach students how to use tools like Comet for research and productivity rather than for cheating.
  • Reinforce ethical, responsible practices.

Comet and similar AI browsers show the future of the web — faster, conversational, and automated. But in education, they also highlight the importance of secure testing environments. Respondus LockDown Browser is a critical safeguard, and it should be paired with thoughtful assessment design and clear policies to maintain academic integrity.

Excellent and useful piece! I always use Respondus with screen recording if the exam is in class and add the webcam if online.
