Finance Club 2024 Updates

The Finance Club has had a very successful year, thanks to the help of three students and some excellent speakers representing local financial institutions…

The College of Charleston Finance Club was re-introduced in 2022 by Professor Holtz.  The club is dedicated to building a vibrant community of students passionate about finance and investing.

The club’s mission is to provide members with greater insights into various finance sectors and expose them to finance professionals.   We want to equip members with the knowledge, skills, and networking opportunities needed to thrive in the financial industry. Through educational events, guest lectures, and strategic networking, we enable students to deepen their industry understanding and develop essential professional relationships.

Since 2022, the club has hosted guest speakers from 15 different companies in commercial banking, private equity, real estate and wealth management.  In 2023 Olivia Johnson, a senior majoring in Finance with a minor in Business Administration, instituted many improvements to the club including expanding its visibility through social media platforms like Instagram, GroupMe, and Cougar Connect.  As a result of these improvements, the number of Finance Club members has risen to almost 300 members.

Fall 2024 Achievements
This semester, the club held 6 meetings, and attendance has averaged 40 students. Students have been able to network with professionals from Greystar, Raymond James, United Bank, South State Bank and Tandem Investments. Increased on-campus engagement, like tabling and promoting events on social platforms, has boosted student involvement. We also launched a trading simulation through MarketWatch to foster engagement and build students’ confidence in trading and personal finance. Top performers in the trading game were awarded prizes. The Finance Club expanded with new members: Ben Weins, a junior, as Vice President, and Gabby Garcia, a freshman, as Treasurer.

Spring 2025 Goals
Next semester goals include reaching more students in the School of Business, diversifying our speaker list to meet varied student interests, and supporting students in securing career opportunities and internships. Our ultimate aim is to enrich the lives of students within the School of Business and prepare them for real-world success.
