Setting the Standard
In today’s polarized world, fostering an environment of civil discourse is more crucial than ever. We in the School of Business have a unique opportunity to set the standard for respectful and productive discussions. While pondering this, I asked Copilot to suggest some strategies to help achieve this goal:
- Model Respectful Behavior: Lead by example by demonstrating respect for all opinions, listening actively, and acknowledging valid points.
- Establish Clear Guidelines: Set expectations for respectful behavior and outline consequences for incivility at the start of each course.
- Encourage Diverse Perspectives: Promote inclusivity by encouraging students to share their diverse viewpoints, enriching the discussion.
- Facilitate Constructive Debates: Teach students to focus on issues, use evidence, and avoid personal attacks during debates.
- Address Incivility Promptly: Address any incivility immediately to maintain a respectful atmosphere and reinforce the importance of civil discourse.
- Provide Resources and Training: Offer workshops and resources on effective communication and conflict resolution.
- Foster a Growth Mindset: Encourage students to view feedback as an opportunity for growth, promoting continuous learning and improvement.
That’s a solid list. I think many are already happening. It’s encouraging to see the work being done at the College to ensure that our campus respects differing viewpoints.
Thank you for setting the standard.
YOU make a difference!
