Supervising a Bachelor’s Essay

Several colleagues have been contacted this week to discuss requests from students to supervise a Bachelor’s Essay.

If you’ve never supervised a Bachelor’s Essay before, seek advice about the tasks associated with the requirement (e.g., a senior faculty member, your Chair, myself, etc.). Also review the information provided by the Honors College to students regarding the Bachelor’s Essay Process and the database maintained by the Honors College of completed projects. Your department might also have best practice recommendations for Bachelor’s Essays in your department (e.g., see this guide created by Management and Marketing faculty).

The required forms can be found here: Office of the Registrar – Undergraduate Forms for Faculty – All Documents (sharepoint.com) Work with your admin to complete and submit Bachelor’s Essay Form A and Form B to complete student registration.

Read the above forms carefully, and be sure to include all of the required items on your syllabus. Doing so will help establish clear expectations and boundaries for the project.

In April 2024, the College of Charleston will host the 3rd Annual EXPO to celebrate student research, scholarship, creative inquiry, and community service. Consider including presentation at the EXPO as a required outcome of the project.

There is certainly a time requirement, but the process is often personally and professionally rewarding.
