Launch Sequence

It’s hard to believe that there are only 12 days until the start of the semester. This time next week, we will be kicking off the semester together in Wells Fargo. Often, we view the start of a new semester as a launch. This semester is no exception, and we are watching closely with a record incoming class.

Attending high school in Merritt Island with a father who worked in the space program for more than 20 years, launch sequences were simply a way of life; they seemed natural. Each step leading to ignition and beyond was carefully monitored and planned—even the pauses. Sometimes there were issues to be addressed, and sometimes things were going exactly as expected. NASA carefully examined the data and adjusted it accordingly. Ground Control monitored the spacecraft until launch and during the entire flight.

Pre-covid, things just sort of happened like prior semesters with very little thought – or so it seemed. Summers are always jam-packed for our facilities, technology, A/V, and classroom support groups. They are busily ensuring the campus is ready for the start of the new year. And numerous orientations make sure the incoming students are prepared as well. We’re ready.

Today, post-covid, we are more acutely aware that things can change at a moment’s notice. The unanticipated wildfires in Maui reminded me of that. But we are ready to adjust if needed. It’s what’s required to make sure we have a successful launch and flight – I mean, semester.

While the focus during a launch is often on Ground Control, it wouldn’t have been possible without all the team members, like my dad, doing their part. A successful semester won’t happen without each of us doing our part. Thank you for doing your part to make sure the mission, our mission, is a success.

We’ve done and continue to do what is necessary to make the upcoming year great, and I believe it will be just that.

YOU make a difference!

Ponder this …
