#MaroonMemories with Jeremy Clement ’01
We caught up with HTMT Senior Instructor, Jeremy Clement ’01, MBA, PMP:
- Jeremy, so what #MaroonMemory will you tell? Well, my student memories are a little fuzzy these days, so I would highlight one of my high points as a faculty member. I caught the travel bug as an underclassmen when I studied abroad in Utrecht, Holland in ’99. Once I joined the faculty, I immediately looked for opportunities to travel as an instructor. My colleague Brumby McLeod was running our spring break program to Banff National Park and our Maymester program to Iceland. He was gracious enough to include me in both and these trips have been something I look forward to year after year. In particular, on the ’19 Spring Break trip I was able to include 4 of our Schottland Scholars – a School of Business leadership development program I’ve run since ’17 – in the student cohort. I already have a great relationship with these Scholars as I work closely with them throughout the year. Getting to opportunity to travel and explore with them in Canada was definitely a ‘cherry on top’ moment.
- Did a special faculty or staff member have a profound impact on your life? Yes, John Crotts -who left the College for Hawaii in Fall of 2022- was my advisor during my undergrad years, became a mentor and advisor after I graduated, and eventually let me back to my career as a faculty member here.
- Did you find your “CofC Sweetheart” at the College? Not directly, but she’s alumna too! We actually met working at the Renaissance Hotel just near campus. We were both at the College and had the same professors, but never at the same time.
- Can you trace your career path back to a defining moment at our alma mater? No, but my career has definitely come full circle back to the College. It was at the College where I developed my love for the hospitality industry and the skills to pursue a career in it. When I decided that teaching was what I wanted to do next, there was no other place on my mind. As I began to pursue the education required to teach, I sought out a job on campus that would allow me to immerse myself in the College culture. I worked on campus for 6 years as I earned my Masters. Eventually taking on an adjunct position in the SB that led to my current role!
- Have connections you made on campus turned into lifelong friendships? Absolutely, both with colleagues and former students. Many of my closest friends these days are former students who have kept in touch over the years. Not much is more satisfying that getting to witness their success up close and personal!
- Are you a CofC legacy? Not yet…I don’t think! My wife is a 4th generation legacy at the College. We are hoping one of our daughters will make a 5th! So maybe a legacy in the making?!
