Charleston School of Business Faculty & Staff Updates

Belonging

From day one, you’ve welcomed me to the School of Business and made me feel like I belong here. You’ve been patient, explained things, and simply let me be me. But, unfortunately, that’s not everyone’s experience.

As the academic year comes to a close, it’s natural to reflect on the previous 9+ months. We’ve progressed on the cornerstones I presented during my interview (FACE). We are discovering ways to ensure our Fiscal Sustainability. We are progressing on our Academic Distinction, and Collaborating in multiple areas on and off campus. But, Cornerstone #4, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, & Belonging, hasn’t received the attention I would have liked. Thankfully, individuals have approached me over the last few weeks with ideas they want to pursue. I am so thankful for the great team we have in the School.

I decided to ask ChatGPT (3.5) this question, “What are the keys to helping someone feel like they belong?” And it did not disappoint!

Feeling a sense of belonging is an essential human need that can greatly impact one’s well-being and happiness. Here are some keys to helping someone feel like they belong:

  • Acceptance: Acceptance is the foundation of creating a sense of belonging. When people feel accepted for who they are, they are more likely to feel like they belong. This means accepting their flaws, strengths, and quirks without judgment.
  • Connection: Building connections with others is vital in fostering a sense of belonging. Encourage the person to join groups or communities that align with their interests, hobbies, or beliefs. This can help them find like-minded people who share similar values and experiences.
  • Validation: Validating someone’s experiences, thoughts, and emotions is crucial in creating a sense of belonging. It means acknowledging their feelings and perspectives, even if you don’t necessarily agree with them.
  • Inclusion: Making someone feel included is essential in creating a sense of belonging. Inviting them to events or activities, asking for their opinions, and including them in conversations can help them feel valued and part of the group.
  • Empathy: Showing empathy is an effective way to create a sense of belonging. This means putting yourself in their shoes, understanding their experiences and feelings, and responding with kindness and compassion.

By implementing these keys, you can help someone feel like they belong, which can positively impact their mental health, self-esteem, and overall happiness.

Wow, that’s good. I don’t think I can add anything.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the same experience as me. We have work to do on the 4th Cornerstone (EDIB) to help everyone feel like they can bring their best selves each day. Imagine an environment that positively impacts mental health, self-esteem, and overall happiness. It would take learning to the next level, and that would be a great place to work.

I look forward to creating that reality – together.

YOU make a difference! TOGETHER we can do amazing things.
