Reminder-Call for Nominations: 2023 Distinguished SB Faculty Awards
Howard F. Rudd, Jr. Distinguished Faculty Award for Service Leadership
Criteria & Benefits
- Purpose/History: Award was established in 2013 in honor of founding Dean Rudd to recognize outstanding, high-performing B-School professors who lead by example and advance the mission and global vision of the School of Business.
- Selection: A special group convenes each year to select the recipient, made up of:
- Members of the faculty development committee
- A B-School staff member
- A student who sits on the Dean’s Student Forum
- A BOG member

Nominees for the award are received shortly after the start of the spring semester. Each nominated award candidate submits an application for the selection group to consider. Only candidates who received “exceeds expectations” in all categories of their most recent annual evaluation are invited to submit the formal application. Nomination letters should be emailed to William M VanDenburgh (vandenburghbm@cofc.edu). The deadline for letters of nomination is February 26, 2023.
- The selection committee considers the following in making its determination of the recipient:
- Service leadership (heaviest emphasis)
- Research
- Teaching
- Business community engagement
- Award: The award provides the recipient $10,000, of which up $5,000 may be taken as a personal stipend, and $5,000 may be taken may be used during the year that follows to support the recipient’s community engagement, professional development, research, and other service initiatives.
During the year that follows their selection, the recipient is also known as the Howard F. Rudd Jr. Faculty Member of the Year and may have his/her service-related activities profiled by the School of Business or the College.
2023 Distinguished Teaching Award
Award: $1,000 and award plaque
Number of recipients annually: 1
Restrictions: Individuals can receive this award at most once every 3 years; award based on teaching during the 2022 calendar year; nominees must be tenured/tenure-track faculty or instructors
Committee: SB Faculty Development Committee
Letters of nomination should describe why the nominee has been an outstanding teacher during the 2022 calendar year. Please provide specific examples and documentation if possible. Nomination letters should be limited to one page, and emailed to Ken Soyeh (soyehkw@cofc.edu). The deadline for letters of nomination is February 26, 2023.
The committee will request the following materials from each nominee:
- Statement of teaching philosophy (2 pages maximum)
- Sample syllabi (up to three)
- Student evaluations for all courses taught during the review period
- Grade distributions by course
- Optional materials: samples of assignments, peer evaluations, etc
Criteria used to choose award recipient:
- Teaching assignments and loads
- Quality of materials submitted
- Student evaluations and grade distribution
2023 Distinguished Research Award
Award: $1,000 and award plaque
Number of recipients annually: 1
Restrictions: Individuals can receive this award at most once every 3 years; award based on research published during past three calendar years (2020, 2021, 2022)
Committee: SB Faculty Development Committee
Letters of nomination should describe the significance of the nominee’s research published during the past three calendar years. Nomination letters should be limited to one page, and emailed to Ken Soyeh (soyehkw@cofc.edu). The deadline for letters of nomination is February 26, 2023.
The committee will request the following materials from each nominee:
- Current CV with research published in 2020, 2021, and 2022 highlighted
- Indicators of research quality (eg., citation counts, journal impact factors, journal acceptance rates, etc)
- Sample publications (up to three)
Criteria used to choose award recipient:
- Impact of research
- Quality and quantity of refereed/scholarly publications during the past 3 calendar years
- Other research activities
2023 Distinguished Adjunct Teaching Award
Award: $1,000 and award plaque
Number of recipients annually: 1
Restrictions: Individuals can receive this award at most once every 3 years; award based on teaching during the 2022 calendar year; nominees must have taught at least 5 sections in the SB, with at least two sections taught during 2022.
Committee: SB Faculty Development Committee
Letters of nomination should describe why the nominee has been an outstanding adjunct teacher during the 2022 calendar year. Please provide specific examples/documentation if possible. Nomination letters should be limited to one page, and emailed to Ken Soyeh (soyehkw@cofc.edu). The deadline for letters of nomination is February 26, 2023.
The committee will request the following materials from each nominee:
- Statement of teaching philosophy (2 pages maximum)

2023 Distinguished Service Award
Letters of nomination should describe the ways in which the nominee has given unusual and distinguished service to the SB, College, community, and/or academia/profession, and/or has demonstrated a dedication to students through service and advising, during calendar year 2022. Examples and documentation should be provided when possible. Nomination letters should be limited to one page and emailed to William VanDenburgh (vandenburghbm@cofc.edu). The deadline for letters of nomination is February 26, 2023.
The committee requests the following materials from each nominee:
- Current CV with a highlighted list of service activities during 2022 detailing service to SB, College, community, and/or academia/profession
- List of any other service activities that are not on your CV
