Below are the topics that will be covered by each cohort during the upcoming semester. We hope this gives you a better idea of what your student is learning AND of what skills you might hear your student talking about (or see in action during fall and winter break).
Freshmen
Support Session: Transition to College is designed to help new students make a successful transition to the College of Charleston both academically and personally. The course promotes engagement in academics and campus organizations while helping students develop critical thinking skills and clarifying their sense of direction as they take this first step toward independence. Topics include: basic cooking, hygiene, living with roommates, developing a social niche, etc. In addition to this support session, students also take a course designed to develop their writing skills.
Sophomores
Support Session: Personal Finance teaches the ins and outs of personal financial responsibility. Topics include: setting money management goals, tracking spending, fixed vs. flexible expenses, needs vs. wants, credit cards, and much more.
Juniors
Support Session: Business & Personal Communication is designed help students develop a better understanding of communication and the different rules of business versus personal communication with the goal of improving their ability to communicate effectively in different settings. Topics include: communication barriers, initiating conversation, small talk, text messaging and email etiquette, maintaining social media accounts, etc.
Seniors
Support Session: Advanced Personal Finance will delve deeper into the aspects of personal finance necessary for independent living. Topics include: budgeting, online banking and bill pay, credit, loans, and more. In addition to this support session, students will also cover adult presentation, disability disclosure in the workplace, and more in depth concepts of appropriate communication and workplace behavior.
