Congratulations, parents! You have every reason to be proud of your graduating senior – their hard work and accomplishments have made them ready to enter the adult world. We would like to share a couple of things for you to keep in mind as your student returns home.
Please continue to see them as competent young adults. It is natural for students to regress into the roles they’ve normally assumed at home. Require them to do more. Consider challenging them to step up by:
- giving them timelines to look for and find a job;
- letting them be responsible for paying their cell phone bill and other expenses while they are living in your home;
- setting an expectation around chores (remember, they’ve been washing/folding/ironing their laundry here for the past four years);
- referring to their PATH Plans – where they have expressed their plans, goals, and dreams; and
- remembering they have the knowledge, skills, and ability to make their own decisions. Let them continue to do so. They know to come to you when they’re struggling.
It has been our pleasure educating and preparing your student for this new phase of life.
We wish you all the very best!
