National Campus Safety Awareness Month Week 3

By | September 20, 2016

We are now in our third week of National Campus Safety Awareness Month. We have enjoyed working with our campus partners to raise awareness on a wide variety of health and safety issues.

This week also marks the start of National Hazing Prevention Week. NHPW is an opportunity for campuses, schools, communities, organizations, and individuals to raise awareness about the problem of hazing, education others about hazing, and promote the prevention of hazing. HazingPrevention.Org™ is the organizer of National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW). For more information, please visit the HazingPrevention.Org website, or contact the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life.

For the third week of Campus Safety Awareness Month, we hope that you will be able to attend the following events:

September 20th

Bystander Intervention Workshop

5pm Stern Center 205

When it comes to being a positive active bystander, we ask a lot of our students. This workshop is designed to ensure our students know that their voice matters and feel empowered to use it. A blend of bystander intervention and conflict management techniques, this workshop leads students through the theory of how someone becomes a bystander to real-world application. Students will learn the basic definition of Title IX, the 4 D’s of bystander intervention, which technique is best-suited to their conflict management style, and resources about where to find confidential help on campus. Please contact Alison Berk in the Office of the Dean of Students for more information on this event.

September 22nd

No Violence No Victims Candlelight Vigil

6:45pm-8pm Cistern Yard

The Office of Victim Services will be hosting the eighth annual No Violence-No Victims Candlelight Vigil on September 22nd at 6:45pm in the Cistern Yard. Two CofC students and an alumna will share their stories of victim to survivor. Stand in support of commitment to reducing and eliminating interpersonal violence. The rain location for this event is the Wells Fargo Auditorium in the Beatty Center.

September 23rd

Women’s Volleyball Game featuring “It’s Your Place”

7pm TD Arena

Representatives will be on site at the women’s volleyball game to promote the College’s It’s Your Place Bystander Intervention Campaign. The College of Charleston’s It’s Your Place campaign educates on topics related to sexual misconduct and bystander intervention; empowers campus and community members, and advocates for informed, empowered, and active bystanders.
