By | September 1, 2014

The Department of Public Safety in partnership with Residence Life, Student Life, Counseling and Substance Abuse, Victim Services, Emergency Management, Community Relations, and the Center for International Education is proud to sponsor National Campus Safety Awareness Month throughout the month of September.  Every year, weekly themes are chosen to raise awareness of particular issues affecting campuses throughout the nation.  This year’s themes, by week, are Domestic Violence, Dating Violence & Stalking (Awareness, Prevention & Response), Sexual Violence (Awareness, Prevention & Response), Emergency Preparedness & Response, and Fire Safety & Awareness.  We have lined up numerous programs, demonstrations, and information sessions throughout the month to bring awareness to these issues and other aspects of Campus Safety.

For the first week of Campus Safety Awareness Month, we hope that you will be able to attend the events that have been lined up.

On September 2nd, Residence Life, Counseling and Substance Abuse, and Victim Services will be hosting the Campus Safety Awareness Month Kick-Off Party in Cougar Mall from 12pm to 2pm.  Come and enjoy free food and drink while receiving information from numerous departments and presenters on a variety campus safety related topics.

Also on September 2nd, Counseling and Substance Abuse will be hosting a talk titled “Why does he/she do that? Angry and controlling people in intimate relationships” in the Robert Scott Small building Room 252 beginning at 3:30pm.

On September 3rd, come have Breakfast with Public Safety in Cougar Mall from 9:30am until the food runs out.  Bagels and Coffee will be served.

On September 4th, the Cougar Counseling Team will have an information table set up with information on Dating Violence from 10am to 2pm.  The location will be determined soon!

Also on September 4th, the Office of Victim Services and SCOPE (Safe Campus Outreach, Prevention & Education Peer Group) will have an information table set up in the Stern Center Lobby from 11am to 1pm.

Look for weekly e-mails with updates as to what programs and activities are being offered in the coming weeks.  Until then, please visit the National Campus Safety Awareness Month website for more information.  Also, look for the “Lock it or Lose it” bicycle display at different locations around campus during the month.  It shows the preferred method of securing your bicycle to reduce the chances of it getting stolen.
