The Department of Public Safety is informing the College of Charleston Campus community of the following activity occurring on and off-campus.
Since approximately February 1, 2013, individuals have been on campus and in the surrounding areas soliciting sales of magazines. In one instance, which occurred off campus and was reported to the Charleston Police Department by a College of Charleston student, they may have been responsible for the theft of a motor vehicle, as well as a purse, wallet, credit cards and cash. In another incident, the subjects gained entry to a secured residence hall, and obtained information for a debit card, charging a total of $110 to the card, before the student realized she was the possible victim of fraud and reported this activity to the College of Charleston Department of Public Safety.
The campus community is being advised to be alert to these individuals being in the area. On campus residents should not let anyone they do not know and who don’t have a legitimate purpose for being there, into residence halls; particularly those that do not have staffed front desks. Off campus residents should be cautious of opening their door to strangers, and should always lock their doors, whether they are home or not. If you come in contact with, or observe these salespersons on, or in the area of, the College of Charleston campus, please notify the Department of Public Safety or the City of Charleston Police Department.
