A Tied Race

This scene is a wonderful example of how montage can fill in gaps of a story within one’s subconscious. Shortly before this clip it was explained how more and more people were becoming jobless during this time. Millions of people were looking for jobs. This scene opens up with people gathering around, reading the newspapers and maps, most likely reading similar headlines to what was shown before. After this, it is shown how groups of people would travel together looking for work. Without any words, this scene shows everything a person needs to see in order to understand the context. Not only is there an underlying theme or message of unity, but we can also infer what is happening just from seeing the people. They travel around, being denied from work, looking for more, all together. There is no “race” for these jobs, they are working together. This unity is shown in one particular shot, when the bikes are lined up perfectly, showing not one specific person in “first place”, rather they are “tied” and working together.
