In this scene from the film, The Silent Revolution, Kurt’s father is called by the Russian soldier to prove that Kurt is going West to see his grandfather’s grave. Kurt does not know what his father will say because his father is against the West and a high-ranking government official. If his father lies, he could lose his position, be arrested, or worse. A non-diegetic sound, a song known as “Far and Beyond” by Charles Bolt, is added to the clip to enhance the scene in many ways. First of all, Kurt expects his father to tell the truth to the officer, making the beginning of the scene suspenseful with richer notes in the song. This is also shown by the angle of the camera. Kurt is shot from a high angle while his father is shot from a low angle, giving his father power over him in this scene. The song escalates to louder with lighter notes. This symbolizes the sentiment and kindness of this scene. Kurt’s father did one final act of kindness before Kurt leaves the East and Kurt does not know if he and his father will see each other again. This song reflects these feelings for the two characters without being overemotional because Kurt and his father never had an emotional or affectionate relationship, yet emphasizes how Kurt’s father surprised him with one final act of sacrifice. It highlights the father’s reserved nature as well with its light notes and gentle sound.
