The Everyday Life of The Working Class

In this scene of Kuhle Wampe, when the family is having dinner, just before the son of the family decides to commit suicide, I thought it was essential to include. This scene has the family discussing ways of finding work but to no avail and even blaming the son for being lazy after he returned empty-handed. I think this clip is important because it shows how desperate the family is; even though this is revealed to us at the beginning of the film, we are constantly reminded that the people in this movie are struggling. I feel this scene shows what every day at the dinner table is like for the family, always discussing not finding jobs, and with their frustration, they seem to blame one another, especially the son. In addition, I think the editing is something to take notice of. Throughout this scene, most of the shots are medium shots and usually not centered with the character that is speaking, and while the family is talking to one another, there are multiple jump-cuts that switch to the bikes of the people looking for jobs. After each jump cut of the bikes, it returns to the family criticizing the boy who never says anything. This content is crucial because it shows how the son desperately looked for work, the family being in disarray, and it sets a very depressing tone. I think when Brecht created this scene, he wanted to show his audience how the working-class people of Germany felt.
