DH Creations: Apocalyptic Blog

For my final project I want to create a blog and have an apocalyptic theme as most of the themes of the poems we have read in class are of that theme. There are a number of poets we’ve been through with these themes but at the top of my head I am thinking of Yeats, since he wrote a lot about war poems. Or Wallace Stevens Snowman is a good one, too. I want to find pictures of what the poem is about for example Easter 1916 by Yeats I would find a picture of how it was then (after the revolution) and then how it looks now. Under each picture and post I will elaborate a little on what each poem means and explain why the theme is apocalyptic. For this project I will definitely do most of my research from the library and online. I will be explaining each poet’s style of writing and if this theme is common amongst them therefore I will be needing to have their biographies. Most of the pictures too will be from online so that is another thing I will need to research. I plan on using a blog by WordPress and use a dark theme to match the apocalyptic tone of which I am writing.

I think this project should definitely begin with research. How do modernist poets use the apocalypse as a trope? Why is it such a pervasive figure in modernist poetry? Do they inherit this from other writers or poets? I say “trope” and “figure” because these poets are using the idea of apocalypse to make meaning in their poems, even as they refer to what can seem like an apocalyptic reality (WWI, etc.). I don’t think the idea of finding pictures will work very well–you’re not just talking about how a place looks before and after. I’m not sure how that would help you unpack the different ways that poets use this trope. For Friday, I’d like to see a list of secondary works that address modernism and ideas of the apocalypse. Let me know if you need help navigating the library catalog or databases.
