1923 a Continuation of the World’s “Spring”

The world was still dealing with the heavy hand that came down upon it during World War I. there were many changes taking place that moved the world closer to what we see today. Everything from politics, to medicine to art, encountered major milestones that went with the changing times.

Arts and Culture

In December of 1923, Irish poet William Butler Yeats was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. It was seen as very significant to him, as well as others from his country, because Ireland had only become a Free State a year earlier.

First Time cover

Time Magazine’s first issue was published in March of 1923. The periodical was printed to give readers access to give readers a quick shot (where the name time comes from) of news and popular culture of the day. It thrived, and now has the largest readership of any magazine in the world.

Science

A major leap was made in the world of medicine by Frederick Grant Banting and John James Rickard Macleod when they discovered how to isolate insulin in order to treat diabetes. This allowed sufferers to manage their sugar levels and lead happier lives.

Political

The landscape of Europe changed in 1923 with the breakdown of the Ottoman Empire in October of 1923. Turkey then became its own country at the end of the empire’s 624 year lifespan.

Social Unrest

Use of money during Hyperinflation in Germany

Hyperinflation rocked Germany after it was forced to pay reparations to the Allies after the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. As a result, the government printed an overflow of German currency casing prices to rise to unbelievable levels and the German Mark to deprecate in value. The money was barely worth the paper it was printed on. For example, a loaf of bread in 1923 cost 200,000,000,000

Prohibition was also past in the US making it illegal to purchase or consume alcohol.
