Iterated function system — fractal generator

November 8, 2012 by Garrett Mitchener

I’m working with a student at a local high school on a senior project that involves fractals.  So I wrote a program for her for generating a particular class of fractals called an iterated function system (IFS).  They’re also called multiple reduction copy machine fractals and chaos game fractals.  IFSs are discussed at length in Michael Barnsley’s book  Fractals Everywhere, and Chaos and Fractals by Peitgen, Jürgens, and Saupe.   IFSs include such famous examples as the Sierpinski triangle, Menger sponge, Koch snowflake, and fern.

Someone requested the program, so I’m posting information about it here.  You can download the editor and some sample IFS files from my IFS-editor repository on github. (shortcut: ZIP of key files)  You’ll need to install Dr. Racket to run it.  There’s not much documentation, but I put an IFS editor demo video on YouTube.
