Brenton LeMesurier let me know that Word Press can render LaTeX markup if you enable the right tools.  Here are his instructions:

  1. On needs a (free) wordpress.com account, though you will be prompted to create one if necessary at some point.
  2. Login at https://blogs.charleston.edu
  3. At left, select plug-ins
  4. Find JetPack by WordPress.com and select “Activate”. (Settings are not needed for the latex part: Jetpack does lots of things!)
  5. Go to the bottom of the plug-ins page and click button “Apply”.
  6. some confirmation is asked for, involving logging in to a wordpress.com account (and if necessary, creating such)

Then you can type

[latex]x^2[/latex]

and it appears typeset: x^2
