Dr. Nancy Nenno, a professor of German at the College of Charleston, teaches the course “We are German: The African Diaspora in German-Speaking Europe.” In April, she sat down with Mo Asumang, a German actor, activist, and filmmaker of German and Ghanaian descent, about her most recent documentary, The Aryans, which depicts her quest to understand the origins and the meaning of the term “Aryan.” She recently published an account of the making of the film, Mo and the Aryans: Alone Among Racists and Neo-Nazis, and her experiences talking with neo-Nazis in Germany, the ethnic Aryans in Iran, and the Ku Klux Klan in the American South.
Mo Asumang is particularly involved in “School without Racism – School with Courage,” an organization dedicated to engaging young people in an on-going discussion about racialism and anti-Semitism, right-wing extremism and chauvinism. In December 2019, Mo Asumang was awarded the “Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany” for her commitment to combating racism and xenophobia.
