Brandy Francis is originally from St. Albans, WV, but recently moved to Charleston, SC to attend the University of Charleston SC – College of Charleston. Brandy attended Marshall University in Huntington, WV, earning dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication and Spanish. She currently serves as a graduate assistant in the Department of Communication teaching COMM 214D as well as a student worker in the Office of Admissions managing their social media.
Why did you choose the Master of Arts in Communication program at College of Charleston?
I chose the College of Charleston because it seemed the most welcoming and exciting. Perhaps most of all, I was ready for a change and ready to move on from WV, and Charleston offered warm weather, family and the ocean.
Describe a project or experience relevant to your MCOM program of study that you are currently working on or have already accomplished (graduate assistantship, research project, internship, etc.)?
This past January, NBC hosted one of the primary democratic debates here in downtown Charleston. Dr. Ruth had previously contacted them asking if they would need student volunteers, and I was lucky enough to be one of them. Initially, I just thought it would be fun to see behind the scenes of a live debate, but by the end, I knew I had finally found something I loved to do. Since then, I have taken every opportunity I could to be involved with news production, and I have simply grown to love it more.
What are your plans following graduate school (professional career, doctoral program, personal aspirations, etc.)? Why?
Following graduate school, I intend to pursue a career in production management. I hope to intern with NBC this summer, and continue to stay connected through my last year of grad school. Upon graduation, it is my goal to begin producing at a local station, and work my way towards a network position. I love the fast-pace atmosphere of live television; I enjoy the feeling of accomplishment you get after every task is complete – big or small. Most of all, I enjoy being surrounded by like-minded people who enjoy the rush as much as I do.
What is one piece of advice that you would give incoming graduate students?
Take every opportunity you are given – you never know what will come of it.
What is a fun fact about you that most people do not know?
I have been in gymnastics or cheerleading since I was 3 years old. I love tumbling and performing, and I think it would be fun to perform in a Cirque du Soleil show! I have always wanted to try the trapeze or aerial silks!
