Why do we still talk about the Academy Awards?

Often considered the most important film awards in the United States, the Academy Awards have come under particularly harsh criticism in the past few years for its white hetero-normative position in nominating and selecting winners. Noteworthy is a lack of people of color and women. While the Oscars still have a ways to go as Chris Rock and Steve Martin point out in their opening remarks, history was made last night with the first non-American, non-English language film winning Best Picture. Parasite not only took home the top prize but also the most awards, winning 4 of the 6 categories it was nominated for.
