Ting’s Bizarre Viewing Habits

Even before the start of the quarantine, the best way to describe my viewing habits, is that it is in a constant loop. I barely watch anything new because I like to binge watch a show. If I like I do not want it stop so I mostly watch the same shows in rotation. Until a show that is on a list I have has completed the season they are currently on. The show I would watch would be sitcom or anime and/or cartoon. Like this past week I have re-watched the first three season of My Hero Academia waiting for fourth season to be completed in dub, re-watched KonoSuba, the third season of Netflix’s Castlevania, and the first four season of Community. Then if I’m not watching those shows I would be on YouTube listening to anime OST, What If(s)… , or watching Let’s Play. As I type this I am currently listen to JonTron’s Flex Tape video then Dragon Ball WHAT IF. If I am not watching a show or on YouTube I will be on my social media site Funnyjunk reading or watching whatever content is on feed. Also while I am viewing all of that I be working on some schoolwork, eating, playing Borderlands 3, or doing some little exercises. Now that is my weekday viewing routine on weekends it is about the same but it is also the time when I re-watch or start to watch movies.  Either for fun, for this class or another one, films that I have watched for another class are Two-Lane Blacktop, Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior, Paris, Texas, and Thelma And Louise. I have re-watched Avengers: Endgame, Joker, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly I have watch some stuff that are new to me like Frozen 2, My Dinner With Andre, and One Piece: Stampede. So that is viewing habit and I feel like I conclude that I am just a creature of habit but I am also really lazy so I really never took the time to look for something new to watch. I don’t mind if someone would suggest a show or movie for me to watch but I can say one thing is that if this pandemic continues my viewing habits may not change. I’m kind of a mountain of procrastination and laziness.

Here Are Examples Of My Viewing Habits

Quarantine Machine woo woo

Since quarantine and continued through this past week, I have been watching relatively less movies than I used to. I was better at planning out my days with physical school and since deadlines are constantly floating around my head I can’t justify watching the amount of movies and tv shows I used to. I saved my media consumption for the weekends and we are seemingly in a purgatory-esque Sunday evening.
I do spend a lot of time on the internet, though, streaming youtube links that I am recommended by friends and family (Connor O’malley, Tim Heidecker) and browsing social media. I have been watching a lot of comedy on Youtube and Twitter since quarantine. Since last Monday I haven’t seen any new movies or tv shows except the tiny clips I find in the film facebook groups I frequent and Film Twitter. Besides, of course, the two first episodes of Babylon Berlin which I watched today. Before this class I discussed this TV show with Dr. Bodek and watched the first two episodes and nothing more. I plan to finish the season this time.
I did memorize the “I am your mother” monologue from Hereditary (2018) from watching it on repeat one restless afternoon. I also heavily discussed Funny Games with my highschool friends. They watched the original Heneke version (1997) and I have seen the, shot-for-shot remake from 2007 starring my treasured Naomi Watts a couple years ago so basically the same movie. They discussed the cleverness of making a movie so blatantly in the control of the character yet still terrifying an audience since they are witnessing it happen. This movie makes fun of you for your empathy creating a psychological thriller that sticks with you, in the comfort of your home. I kept thinking back about our discussion of the use of showing sexual assault in film. In the case of this movie it really is just there for the horror-factor, which does feel cheap to me.

Internet Sensations

For the last week I have been tracking my watching habits and here is a brief summary and break down of those watching habits. I have been watching a lot more media now that we are in quarantine and it consists of everything from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, TikTok, and live White House press conferences. In recent years I have watched less and less cable TV, to now the only thing I watch on television is sports. As for this past week, I have mainly watched YouTube videos and streamers on a platform called Twitch which is mainly for people playing video games. I’ve noticed that since quarantine began my intake has gone up and with that I have branched out more from my typical content, I have watched more documentaries, specifically on YouTube and most recently one called “For the 25” which is about a military sniper unit in Afghanistan. On top of this I have also been reading more news articles about updates about the virus and things happening around the world in general. In order to keep myself busy I am watching these things whenever I have free time, so it is an all day affair. As for changes that have been happening on the internet, I have seen more content creators on multiple platforms views skyrocket. More people using it means more possible viewers and these creators are taking advantage of this in a good way, and so are the viewers. Everyone has more time to find people that make the content that interest them that maybe they wouldn’t have found normally. One of my favorite things that has come out of this is John Krasinski’s YouTube channel that he made in order to spread positivity in these troubling times. He shares stories of hope and other things that have been overshadowed by the coronavirus. Another positive to come out of this quarantine is other sorts of entertainment being able to make huge steps, like esports. Since other sports are cancelled, and esports can be played competitively remotely, they are getting air time on channels like ESPN.

Quaratine Binge Watch = day spent

I have been watching movies mainly on all streaming platforms, including on an actual DVD player. Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and even ITunes offer brand new movies on all of the platforms over the past three weeks, which have made them more accessible during the day with something new to watch everytime I log in. The majority of what I watch is Netflix, Hulu, and even YouTube. I normally watch it over the period of the day. I like to turn on a movie while i do my work for the day, as I just listen to their discussions instead of preferably music. As COVID-Hit and the stay at home orders were issued, most of my days are glued to a screen. It has been more tempting to watch new movies online, more than actually going to the theater. I have watched new seasons of new shows and have finished them in just a weekend. My viewing habits have become very high in terms of what I do, but there is really no where to go. I am sort of a homebody, so it hasn’t really affected my viewing habits as they were actually very high. It’s so accessible and easy to get on and watch, but it has been brutal for paying for WiFi for almost a month. The internet is changing with what is being broadcasted during the pandemic. The internet will change from this, especially in how people think of each other and write about. This period will get all of us more together at the end of this. Everyone misses their friends, especially day after day of watching fiction imitate real life. It will cause everyone in this world to become more connected through what they watch, and especially how the reception of shows and movies will push people to have common interests and hope for life to get on track.

Different Cultural Identities

This scene truly highlights the alienation that Cenik feels in Germany due to his dual nationality. He can not speak Turkish, so he is isolated from the Turkish kids at school. He is not considered German, due to his father’s Turkish blood. This leads to him not being picked for either team during the school soccer match, making him lash out violently against the other students from his bullying. This scene highlights the difficulty for a third generation immigrant to fit into the culture of the country, as he is still considered an outsider to both his country of birth and his ethnicity. He does not fit into either category while at school.

Hotel Conflict

This part of the film highlights the anxiety that Georg faces throughout the film. He decides to get the hotel room, despite the fact that he knows that the hotel receptionist will betray him. Georg is so tired and drained from his journey that his only goal at that moment. The director, Petzold, showcases the differences between these two characters by placing them at opposite sides of the table. The table acts as the literal barrier that stands between Georg and sleep, which represents peace for Georg. The director keeps both of the characters mainly out of frame from each other showing their differing goals. This scene highlights movement as a theme as this is a single stop on Georg’s journey to his potential freedom. The clip interests me as it truly shows Georg’s desperation in that moment. The scene really encapsulates his motivation during his odyssey.  The receptionist also highlights the amount of totalitarian rule in this fascist state, as she says the amount of bureaucratic roadblocks that face Georg for him not to stay at the hotel. It would have been impossible for him to go to the police, making his only option is to comply with the hotel.

It’s 2020…Come On…Get With the Times…

I want to begin with the final question that our instructor proposed. How in the internet changing at this moment in time? This moment in time meaning the current quarantine and Covid-19 pandemic.

I do not necessarily see a change in the way the internet is being utilized, what I see is people changing to adapt to a new situation using currently available technology. When a person that can’t leave their house due to uncontrollable factors, they are forced to use the internet to connect with the people that they would normally connect with on a daily basis. Every walk of life is affected during times like these, but for the sake of our class, I will stick to talking about how I see the university school system changing, or at least evolving into a more modern system for all.

The existence of programs like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, One Note, Skype and Discord has been around for a long time now. However, I feel that up until this point they have been under-utilized in schools and universities since their creation.

Being present in a physical brick-and-mortar classroom does have its advantages to the individual that is learning; but for some of us, and I will go as far as to say that for most of us who don’t live in the dorms, it is actually a major inconvenience. Personally, to go to school at CofC with the goal of getting a degree that is actually respected, rather than an online degree from some random university… I drive a minimum of 100 miles a day to attend even just one class. Luckily, I am a Veteran and have many things provided for me, but could you imagine the other adult learners who don’t have the same luxuries available to them? How could one support a family, have a job, daily personal responsibilities and then try to get a degree at a reputable university such as CofC??

They couldn’t without killing themselves and destroying their relationships with anyone other than the students in their classes and even then, time would still be very limited and it would be hard to make mutually benefiting connections.

I’ve taken many “online courses” and still don’t know much about those subjects compared to what I would have learned in a traditional classroom, but with the internet and programs like Zoom, those online courses would be more like traditional courses with all of the same social contact, accountability and commitment  that is normally seen in a traditional classroom environment. I for one, am sad that our class did not vote as a majority to have our classes administered over Zoom.

I truly hope that our current academic situation will evolve to add this format of classes into their system leading to the benefit of education for those who would not be able to receive it otherwise.

As for my own viewing habits since the quarantine, they have not changed much. I watch some weird, but interesting to me things, mostly on YouTube. Last week, I watched a man who had dipped pond water out of his pond and created a sealed ecosphere to document the changes over a period of two weeks, which then led to more videos on more sealed ecospheres and their documentation. Things like that interest me. I’ve never been much of a fiction guy, I like facts and I like science. For some reason, it is very hard for me to sit and watch something that is not in some way based on facts or reality, it has just never interested me.

Comedic Hitler

This scene is from the opening minutes of the film. It highlights the comedic nature of the film from the very beginning. By making Hitler appear funny, Lubitsch is taking away from his menacing nature. Hitler is separated from the Polish on l as the outsider to a land that he thinks belongs to Germany. He is the focus of the shot, as he walks up to the deli window, which has a very Jewish last name. Deli’s were brought to America by Jewish people, as the food is very ethnically Jewish. I chose this scene as it really sets the stage for the comedic overtones of the film. By having Hitler show up at the beginning of the film in a comedic setting, it leads the audience to not take the film so harshly.

This film showcases a resistance mentally of Lubitsch as he left Germany due to the rise of the Nazi party. The film is a battling the ideals of the Nazi’s by showing them to be incompetent instead of their supposed superiority. Hitler is also shown to not be an intimidating leader, but instead to be rather comedic. The film is basically a response to the propaganda films of the Nazi party, showing the fatal flaws of fascist beliefs.

Cycle of Revenge

The significance for this meme is foreshadowing the ultimate showdown between Shosanna and Colonel Landa. Landa had no idea what Shosanna would go through in order to get her revenge on the Colonel. Had he actually chased after and killed her, there would be no movie. The Colonel and Shosanna are the two most important characters in the film due to this event, that creates the tension and the action throughout the movie. I chose to juxtapose the ending with the beginning of the film in this meme, as this is very important in Tarantino film making. He often directly connects the beginning of his films to the ending of them, such as Pulp Fiction.

My Own Viewing and Streaming Habits

In a typical week, most of my media gets consumed through the platform YouTube. This being said, roughly 15 to 20 percent of media I consume is also from Netflix. My usage of these two platforms will be carefully dissected and compared with one another, also reflecting its change in use since the COVID-19 outbreak creating a dramatic disruption in lifestyle.

First, YouTube is an appealing platform to be because of its user-generated content and the ability to access what is one of the largest varieties of subject material online. My watch history greatly reflects this accessibility, as I consume content spanning various topics. These include, but are not limited to: history, geography, linguistics, science, literature, philosophy, and a small amount of gaming as well. Most videos watched by me are educational, as I find it very interesting to learn a large variety of material, as well as watch it be debated, criticized, or thoroughly examined. Most all of this material is consumed in the late hours of the night, and I frequently notice myself watching or simply listening to a video essay until I fall asleep.

With Netflix, the type of content I consume varies greatly from what I watch on YouTube. Primarily I watch TV series on Netflix which deal in suspense, mystery, crime, or the science-fiction/fantasy genre. With this streaming service, shows as old as The Twilight Zone and as new as Mindhunter are on my list of things to watch together. I also have a habit of watching shows and film which are international in content, particularly in the German language. Both Babylon Berlin and Dark are favorites of mine, for example. I watch Netflix far less often than I do YouTube, using it only once or twice a week and only an episode or two at a time. I rarely, if at all, binge-watch content here. Usually it takes place in the late afternoon, around dinner or closer to sunset. I find that I have to be in a particular mood to watch an actual movie or TV series.

Taking both of these platforms back together, whatever platform I am viewing must indicate my purpose, or reflect what I want to get out of the viewing experience. On YouTube, I expect to learn and entertain myself simultaneously, exploring small niches or logically breaking something down. On Netflix however, all I seek is a story that will thrill me and allow my mind to work in a more problem-solving direction. Since the closure of non-essential businesses in Charleston, I have much more free time on my hands. I am not entirely sure why, but I have noticed a sharp increase in my watch time for YouTube while my Netflix viewing has remained unchanged.
