Ting’s Bizarre Viewing Habits
Even before the start of the quarantine, the best way to describe my viewing habits, is that it is in a constant loop. I barely watch anything new because I like to binge watch a show. If I like I do not want it stop so I mostly watch the same shows in rotation. Until a show that is on a list I have has completed the season they are currently on. The show I would watch would be sitcom or anime and/or cartoon. Like this past week I have re-watched the first three season of My Hero Academia waiting for fourth season to be completed in dub, re-watched KonoSuba, the third season of Netflix’s Castlevania, and the first four season of Community. Then if I’m not watching those shows I would be on YouTube listening to anime OST, What If(s)… , or watching Let’s Play. As I type this I am currently listen to JonTron’s Flex Tape video then Dragon Ball WHAT IF. If I am not watching a show or on YouTube I will be on my social media site Funnyjunk reading or watching whatever content is on feed. Also while I am viewing all of that I be working on some schoolwork, eating, playing Borderlands 3, or doing some little exercises. Now that is my weekday viewing routine on weekends it is about the same but it is also the time when I re-watch or start to watch movies. Either for fun, for this class or another one, films that I have watched for another class are Two-Lane Blacktop, Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior, Paris, Texas, and Thelma And Louise. I have re-watched Avengers: Endgame, Joker, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly I have watch some stuff that are new to me like Frozen 2, My Dinner With Andre, and One Piece: Stampede. So that is viewing habit and I feel like I conclude that I am just a creature of habit but I am also really lazy so I really never took the time to look for something new to watch. I don’t mind if someone would suggest a show or movie for me to watch but I can say one thing is that if this pandemic continues my viewing habits may not change. I’m kind of a mountain of procrastination and laziness.
Here Are Examples Of My Viewing Habits
Post 9: Where is the Joy
This post will be going over some of the naming aspects of some of the characters in Joy tend to show the opposite of what they were intended. The names used in Joy seems to describe their characters to a point but there are some major parts where they act the opposite of their title. In this scene is where Precious starts to adapt to her new life as a worker for the Madame. Her appearance has change and see seems to be having a good time with the other workers, dancing, listening to music, and just over all being a young adult. While they are having fun in the back we see Joy looking to be bored and looking at her phone. For a character to be named Joy but barley show that emotions. Seem to me that the film has that title and gave that character that specific name. As a form of dark irony, that Joy current life really has no joy and that this is what life will seem to be for rest of her life and that she has been doing this for a long time now. That she barely shows any joy possible out of fear that something devastating may happen to her.
Post 8: Joy
For this blog post I’ll be going over the character from the film Joy, Precious. From the start of the film I thought that she was supposed to be main character since we saw her life in Africa before coming to Europe. That we the audience were going to follow her journey in paying off her debt and also making some money to help her family back home. Then when we are introduced to Joy the true main character of the film I was kind glad. After watching the film Precious seemed like another background characters. She seems to act like the other indebted women, and the only difference is that she is apart of the main character’s story and a MacGuffin of sorts for the main character. It is because of Precious situation that Joy was able to get out of her debt and be able to use all the money she has earn to help out herself and her family. Precious is another Static Character from a list of Static Character tropes that have been seen. She is in debt to someone and that someone wants her do something very immoral but she does want to do it. Even at the end when she was sent to Italy she still had the gall to ask Joy for her help. Even after Joy told her that she was willing to kill her to save herself. I know she was desperate but it is her fault for taking this chance to come to Europe. Nothing in this world is for free and Precious has yet to learn that.
Growing Up
The two stills I chosen are from Almanya: Willkommen in Deutschland, the reason I choose these two is because of the charater development that both Hüseyin and Muhamed shown. We see Veli at the end of the film stay in is childhood home and planning on to rebulid it. I see this scene as Muhamed ending his childhood and/or youthful nature and focusing on become more of an adult. I say that even though he may seem like an adult he still has that childhood attachment to Coca-Cola. Near the beginning of the film we see that this attachment to the soft drink still cling on to him like a leech and attach itself to another living thing. The scene where Muhamed seems to possibly be sexually aroused to Coca-Cola and I say possibly be sexually aroused because the scene before showing the giant cola bottle showed the rear end of a woman. This scene can be played off for a laugh but it could also possibly mean that Muhamed’s craving of cola is more a lust for cola. Then near the end of the film is where I see the change when Muhamed became an adult. It would be the agurment with his brother and then their reconciliation. We finally see the two let all out after the death of their father and come to a nonverbal understanding. Then to show more of Muhmaed’s growth would be his last scene with the family. Is his dramtic decision to stay in Turkey seems to mirror his father’s decision to move the whole family to Germany.
Different Cultures
The clip I am analyzing is close to the beginning of the film. The scene is when Ali walks Emmi home from the bar. He begins to start a conversation with Emmi. Their conversation dwindles to the point when Emmi tells Ali that “Other countries have other customs”. She is referring to Ali’s Morocco custom of the children taking care of their parents when they have reached a certain age where they are not able to take care of themselves. But in Germany Emmi stated that this custom does not exist. The statement of “Other countries have other customs” is indeed true. In most Asian countries they somewhat follow the Moroccan custom of the children taking care of the elders but the difference is that this responsibility is for the eldest daughter to take on. There are many more different customs that are probably better known. For example in one of the films we already watched, Almanya has an interesting scene that shows the different customs between the Turks and the Germans. The bathroom scenes show the different lifestyle of the home between the Turks and Germans. The mustache scene shows another custom. This custom points out that an ideal man is not truly a man unless he has a mustache.
Differences
Thought out the film we are shown many different expression of the characters that gave off a feel of realism. The scene with the bathroom really shows the cultural and economic differences between Germany and Turkey. The family believed that Turkey was their true home but after spend a good portion of time in Germany and adapting to its cultural. When they returned to Turkey and saw their home again. The disappointing realization of how different Germany is compare to Turkey causing they to expression a small cultural identity crisis but Fatma near the end of film told her family of how Hüseyin maybe German on paper but if you were take him to the village the people there will vouch for him as a true Turk. That line helps describe her children cultural identity. I picked this scene of Hüseyin because it sums up the family’s expression thought out the film. That there are ups and downs no matter where you go
Title
Throughout the film some of the characters get titles and/or special scene that shows who they are or what they are. The first special scene would be when Hugo Stiglitz is introduce. We the audience do not know who Hugo Stiglitz is but the film give a one minute narration of who Hugo Stiglitz is and what he portrayed to be. Later on the film we are then in Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Hitler’s number 2. Unlike Hugo Stglitz Dr. Goebbels did not get a special scene of why he is Hitler’s number 2 instead one of the character give a short introduction of who he is. I don’t really see anything special about this character to considered Hitler’s number 2. They way he is portrayed seems bland for a high ranking Nazi official/officer there is no sense of intimidation when he introduced. Unlike when we were introduced to Hans Landa with his clam and cool demeanor he gives a sense of intimidation. There many other character throughout the film that are given titles but they don’t get a special shot or introduction scene. Sgt. Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz does shows his ferocity of a bear when he first introduced. Hans Landa explains why he is caused “The Jew Hunter”, it is job he is tasked to do so but seems more like a detective then a Nazi officer. These titles that are given to these character should be and idea of a first impression of what the character is going to be most of these characters follow their title in a way I did not see coming
On the tracks
The scene I picked is where both Georg and Heinz are stowaways on a train traveling to Marseille. In order for Heinz to meet with his family and for Georg to flee Europe to Mexico. I picked this scene because of the journey Georg is taking with Heniz. As they continued on the tracks tracks to Marseille it finally gives Georg some time to relax for a bit and plan out his next move in order to flee the fascist takeover of France and to acquire safe travel to Mexico but he also has to deal with his current problem which is Heinz’s injured leg. We only see Georg help Heinz out only once, which is when administer a sedative into Heinz’s leg to help with the pain but we only see him do that once after that Heinz just laid there as if he was asleep but we learned that he is actually dying when he already dead. We mostly get scenes of Georg reading and looking through the writer’s belongings which gives us more information of the writer which does help Georg out at near the end of his goal. I feel like the train tracks help give Georg time to prepare what he is going to experience next and help him become someone he is not.
At the end Nothing really changed
The still that I have chosen is the very last scene of the film which in my opinion shows a major context of this film is that of the performance of all the actors both as their main character and then as their character’s characters. This scene shows that Joseph Tura no matter what stage he is on he can not recite Hamlet’s soliloquy without someone being displeased. Which is very funny, because after watching his performance as a Nazi Officer and his performance as Professor Siletsky. We see that is indeed a great actor he is able to trick Colonel Ehrhardt, his cohorts, and even Professor Siletsky even for a short amount of time. We can also see that Joseph’s performance can also be extended to improve. When he had to think of a way to convince Colonel Ehrhardt and his cohorts that he is the “real” Professor Siletsky. Then another good scene that shows the actor’s talent for a serious performance would be when they executing their plan to escape Warsaw. Using their costumes from the very beginning of the film we see them give their greatest live performance. The group is committed into a serious like how the Producer Jan Dobosz wanted it in the start and wish that performance they were able to escape to England.
