For this blog post I’ll be going over the character from the film Joy, Precious. From the start of the film I thought that she was supposed to be main character since we saw her life in Africa before coming to Europe. That we the audience were going to follow her journey in paying off her debt and also making some money to help her family back home. Then when we are introduced to Joy the true main character of the film I was kind glad. After watching the film Precious seemed like another background characters. She seems to act like the other indebted women, and the only difference is that she is apart of the main character’s story and a MacGuffin of sorts for the main character. It is because of Precious situation that Joy was able to get out of her debt and be able to use all the money she has earn to help out herself and her family. Precious is another Static Character from a list of Static Character tropes that have been seen. She is in debt to someone and that someone wants her do something very immoral but she does want to do it. Even at the end when she was sent to Italy she still had the gall to ask Joy for her help. Even after Joy told her that she was willing to kill her to save herself. I know she was desperate but it is her fault for taking this chance to come to Europe. Nothing in this world is for free and Precious has yet to learn that.
