In early June, Dr. Jennifer Gerrish presented her recent work on Sallust (Sallust’s Spartacus and Historiography Under the Triumvirs) at the international conference “Spartacus: History and Tradition,” held at the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland.

Professor Susan Divine’s article “Affect, Aliens, and Crisis in Nacho Vigalondo’s Extraterrestre” has will be published in the International Journal of Iberian Studies.
At the 70th Annual Kentucky Foreign Language Conference, April 20-22, at the University of Kentucky, Dr. Carl Wise presented his study “Pirates, Empire, and National Identity in Lope de Vega’s Dragontea” and Dr. Mark P. Del Mastro organized and directed the 15th annual Informative Session of the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society.
Congratulations to Dr. Andrew Alwine, who presented a paper at the Annual Meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South entitled, ‘Oligarchy in Ancient Greece.’ In his paper, Alwine argues for a re-evaluation of the term ‘oligarchy’ – away from the normative Aristotelian focus on institutions to the consideration of broader social processes used to exclude broad political participation.
Professor Joseph R. Weyers’ article “Cross national forms of address in the US and Mexico: Addressing the consumer aquí y allí” has been accepted for publication in the International Journal of the Linguistic Association of the Southwest.
Professor Edward Chauca’s study “Fanatismo en tiempos de guerra y neoliberalismo: Poeta ciego de Mario Bellatin y Un ejército de locos de José B. Adolph,” and Professor Susan Divine’s article “Recuperating Losses: History, Spectacle, Motility in Julio Medem’s Room in Rome/Habitación en Roma” were both published in the latest issue (December 2016) of the refereed journal Hispanófila.
On the heels of the undergraduate conference held at the University of Tennessee on February 25 that was reported earlier, four students traveled to the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill on March 4 to present their research and engage with fellow junior scholars.
