Mroz Global Leadership Inaugural Convening

The Mroz Global Leadership Institute held its Inaugural Convening in March 2022. More than 60 domestic and international guests came to the College of Charleston for two full days of talks and panel discussions on the topics of leadership, diplomacy, and international security. The Inaugural Convening was an opportunity to celebrate the world-wide impact of the EastWest Institute over its 40-year history and the launch of the Mroz Institute and its vision of preparing today’s students to be tomorrow’s global leaders.

During two days of the Convening, we organized 2 keynote addresses, 2 featured talks, 5 breakout sessions, and 5 roundtable discussions. The Convening was a highlight of the spring semester attended by Mayor Tecklenburg, CofC President Hsu, Provost Austin, Hilton and Catherin Smith, LCWA board members, many faculty members, students, and members of the Charleston community. We hosted sixteen speakers, including five CofC faculty members, who shared their insight on migration, covid and climate change, global governance, the challenges of democratic governance and the threat of authoritarianism, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Convening was very impactful on campus, as each panel or talk was attended by 85-110 guests and one panel discussion had standing room only with about 190 in attendance. We offered an remote opportunity to attend panels to our guests, who connected from Armenia, Bulgaria, Canada, France, Hong Kong, Serbia, and many US states.

We hosted the leaders of affiliate organizations– David Firestein from the Bush-China Foundation, Brian Finlay and Bruce McConnel from the Stimson Center, and Anneleen Roggeman for a panel discussion. These organizations, along with the Mroz Institute, continue the legacy of John Edwin Mroz and the EastWest Institute. Among the speakers were world renowned experts on leadership, executive coaches, leaders of non-profit organizations, think-tanks, and international organizations. The highlights of the convening were the keynote addresses by Marshall Goldsmith, best-selling author of books on leadership and mentorship and Rose Gottemoeller, former Deputy Secretary-General of NATO.

Mroz Institute Inaugural Convening “Leadership & Diplomacy”

You’ve likely heard already, but we have a major LCWA event this month!

The Inaugural Convening for the John Edwin Mroz Global Leadership Institute will be held March 20-22, 2022.

  • Monday, March 21 will focus on leadership and we have four of the top CEO executive coaches as presenters (Marshall Goldsmith, John Izzo, David Allen, and Randa Fahmy). Also included are Stephen Heintz (CEO of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund) and Jonathan Fanton (past president of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences).
  • Tuesday, March 22 will focus on international affairs and global challenges and close with a keynote address by Rose Gottemoeller, former deputy secretary of NATO and the lead negotiator of the nuclear arms control treaty with Russia (New START).

But it’s not just about the speakers. There will also be about 50-60 highly connected internationalists with interests covering all regions coming to campus.

There is no registration needed for in-person attendance and we encourage in-person participation. For those who won’t be able to attend events in person, we have a webinar option. Most events will be live-streamed. Breakout sessions that are not live-streamed will be recorded and made available for viewing shortly after the convening.

World Affairs Colloquium Series with Damon Wilson

Join us for a talk on democracy and democratic renewal around the world. Our guest is Damon Wilson, President CEO of the National Endowment for Democracy, will present his lecture, “Forging a Coalition in Favor of Freedom Around the World.” This talk is a co-sponsored by the World Affairs Council of Charleston (WACC) and the Mroz Global Leadership Institute.  It’s open to CofC faculty, staff, students and WACC members.

Damon Wilson is President CEO of the National Endowment for Democracy, a private, non-profit, non-partisan foundation dedicated to the growth and strengthening of democracy throughout the world. It promotes political groups, free markets, trade unions and other independent institutions. Prior to joining the Endowment, he helped transform the Atlantic Council into a leading global think tank as its executive vice president. Previously, Wilson served as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council helping to enlarge a Europe whole, free, and at peace; to secure freedom through NATO enlargement; to deter and counter Russian aggression; and to work with a united Europe as a leading US partner to support democracy in the world.

Busy Semester for the Mroz Global Leadership Institute!

The Mroz Global Leadership Institute is planning a busy semester with speaker series, mentoring and professional development programs for students.

1) Global Ambassadors Program. We recruited a group of nine students for the Global Ambassadors Program. This student leadership program is designed for students interested in civil and foreign service. Global Ambassadors will meet weekly with Mroz Institute’s director to learn about the US foreign service, foreign policy, and international agenda of US agencies. Students will work on practical skills required to function effectively in the foreign policy environment and will interact with guest speakers about foreign service and diplomatic work.

2) EWI History Project. We continue to move forward with the EWI History Project to preserve and make available EWI archives to students and scholars. The archives and oral history project will be launched in time for the inaugural convening in spring 2022. Our team received 1/8 TB of data (125.4 GB), which consists of over 26,000 digital objects, in addition to the the physical collection of 14 bankers boxes, which include published materials and photographs. Our archivist has begun processing the collection.

3)  Visiting Global Fellows Program. We will launch the Visiting Global Fellows Program in spring 2022 by inviting prominent internationalists who will will spend 1-2 weeks at CofC interacting with faculty and students and engaging their professional networks.

4) We are planning the Mroz Institute inaugural convening for March 20-22, 2022 to celebrate the East West Institute and its many accomplishments. There will be panels and discussion sessions on international topics of vital importance. There will be opportunities to experience the EWI archives/history project and contribute to its oral histories. There will be time for networking with the members of the EWI Society and a special reunion for EWI alumni.

Lisa Carty is Director for Humanitarian Financing and Resource Mobilization with the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. She has worked for more than three decades on a variety of international affairs and humanitarian issues. Ms. Carty has had leadership roles in both the public and non-profit sectors including twenty five years as a diplomat with the U.S. Foreign Service with overseas assignments in Asia, the Middle East and Russia. Her United Nations career has included work with the UN Relief Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, as well as positions with the Joint United Nations Program on AIDS. Earlier in her career, Ms. Carty helped lead the work of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Global Health Program and was a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC. She holds a Masters Degree in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service.

Dr. Karen Donfried is president of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF), a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening transatlantic cooperation through policy analysis, fellowships for next generation leaders, and support for civil society.

Before assuming her current role in April 2014, Donfried was the special assistant to the president and senior director for European affairs on the National Security Council at the White House. In that capacity, she was the president’s principal advisor on Europe and led the interagency process on the development and implementation of the president’s European policies. Prior to the White House, Donfried served as the national intelligence officer (NIO) for Europe on the National Intelligence Council, the intelligence community’s center for strategic thinking. As NIO, she directed and drafted strategic analysis to advance senior policymakers’ understanding of Europe.

Donfried has a PhD and MALD from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a Magister from the University of Munich, Germany. She holds a bachelor’s in government and German from Wesleyan University.

Global Ambassadors Program

Global Ambassadors is an academic enhancement program offering mentoring, extracurricular and international experiential learning designed for students interested in careers in international service organizations, including the Foreign Service. This program will create meaningful interaction between the students and distinguished professionals in such organizations who are working on global questions and challenges.

The program will be directed by Dr. Max Kovalov, the Bennett Director of the Mroz Global Leadership Institute.  He will meet regularly with the students and create appropriate learning opportunities, such as presenting materials appropriate for an introduction to the career interest, setting up and participating in advising and discussion sessions, arranging interactions with other eminent professionals, and assisting the student ambassadors in executing projects on a global challenge.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  • Up to 8 students will be selected for the duration of the program, which will run for two semesters (typically fall and spring). Students may apply after their first two semesters on campus, but some preference will be given to students who will be a Global Ambassador in their third or fourth year at the College. Participants will not be restricted by major.
  • For consideration for the program, students should submit: a resume; a personal statement describing their achievements to date at the College, as well as interest in the program and goals for participation (1-2 pages); 2-3 references from faculty. Students must have at minimum an overall GPA of 3.25.
