National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society Inducts 10 New Members

Sigma Delta Pi, Nu ZetaOn April 3, 2014 at 6:30pm in the Alumni Center of the School of Education, nine students and one faculty member were initiated into the College of Charleston’s Nu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society: Lisa Dealmeida, Dan Gary, Olivia Ghiz, Rachel Ellen Harper, Kellane Kornegay, Henry B. Mullin, John H. Wagstaff, Emily Medhus, Stephanie Meier and Professor Gustavo Urdaneta.

Dr. Owens Receives Award at SSEMW Conference in Puerto Rico

The Society for the Study of Early Modern Women (SSEMW) presented Professor Sarah Owens and her co-author Jane E. Mangan the 2012 award for the best collaborative project for their book Women of the Iberian Atlantic (Louisiana State University Press). Both professors were honored at a ceremony held at the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference (October 24-27, 2013) in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Professor Owens also presented a paper and participated in a roundtable session.

CofC’s and The Citadel’s Chapters of Sigma Delta Pi Announce Finalists for 2013 S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year Award

The College of Charleston’s and The Citadel’s chapters of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, are pleased to announce the three finalists for the 2013 S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year award:

Sandra Camacho, TL Hanna High School (Anderson)
Diana Gomez Hudgens, Oakbrook Middle School (Ladson)
Bradford Greer, Christ Church Episcopal School (Greenville)

The awards ceremony, where the 2013 S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year will be crowned, will take place at 7:00pm on November 14, 2013 at the College of Charleston.  November 14 is also the 94th birthday of the National Collegiate Hispanic Society, which was founded at the University of California Berkeley in 1919.

Portuguese Program Welcomes Fulbright FLTA for 2013-14

Thanks to the efforts of Dr. Luci Moreira, the Institute of International Education has awarded the Department of Hispanic Studies a Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant for the 2013-14 academic year. Ms. Juliana Passos of Brazil will join the College of Charleston in August 2013, and while she enrolls in two courses per semester, she will also assist the Portuguese program through the instruction of coursework and collaboration with the Portuguese Club, among other activities.
