American University in Cairo, Egypt Study Abroad Award

Founded in 1919, AUC is a leading English language, American-accredited institution of higher education and a center of intellectual, social and cultural life of the Arab world. Its University community represents over 60 countries. The University offers 37 undergraduate, 44 master’s and 2 PhD programs rooted in a liberal arts education that encourage students to think critically and find creative solutions to conflicts and challenges facing the region and the world. It also offers a globally-recognized, professional, community-based education in English and arguably the best Arabic language/culture program available.

Open to all majors but must be pursuing at least a minor in an LCWA program.

Award Amounts

  • A select number of competitive awards will be available for the exchange program with the American University in Cairo.
    Semester (either fall or spring) up to $7,000
    Full Year (both fall and spring) up to $14,000
  • Awards may be used for expenses incurred because of participation in the program, such as: airfare, room and board, food, insurance/fees, books, travel and transportation while in Egypt.
  • Awards are contingent upon acceptance to study at AUC
  • Awards are subject to taxes.

Required

  • 3.0 GPA
  • In Good Disciplinary Standing
  • Some Arabic language experience or plans to start/continue Arabic language courses while at AUC

Public Service Internship Award!

LCWA has a new Award to give to students!

The Public Service Internship Award is to support increasing student interest and participation in public service, especially foreign service and/or globally focused civil service internships. These experiences give students a coveted and highly valuable inside look at service and diplomacy in action and reveal the wide range of careers associated with public service. These experiences are often unpaid and living and travel is costly.

The awards will be given to students who secure experiential learning opportunities during summer or semester abroad programs. Recipients will be able to apply their work experience to myriad endeavors and will gain a distinguished advantage compared to their peers because of their direct experience working with global issues.

Students will be given a $3,000 – $5,000 internship award for programs that directly relate to public, foreign or civil service. Students will submit the application and be selected by a committee comprised of School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs faculty. The selection committee will recommend award winners to the Dean of LCWA, who will make the final selections. The number of awards given will vary.

All materials must be submitted by the deadline of Wednesday, March 11, 2020.

Professors Hanahan and Hetrovicz Earn Campus-Wide Awards

Professor Devon Hanahan, Senior Instructor of Hispanic Studies, and Professor Lauren Hetrovicz, Adjunct Lecturer of Hispanic Studies, were recipients of the campus-wide Distinguished Service Award and Distinguished Adjunct Faculty Award respectively at the College of Charleston’s “Celebration of Faculty” ceremony on Wednesday, April 24.

CofC’s Nu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi Receives Nat’l Awards

The Nu Zeta Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, received two national awards during the Society’s Triennial Convention on July 8, 2016 in Miami, Florida.  Nu Zeta was among 13 of the 611 chapters of Sigma Delta Pi nationwide to receive the Honor Chapter award for outstanding activities executed during the 2015-16 academic year.  This was the 6th consecutive year that the College of Charleston received this prestigious recognition.  In addition, CofC’s chapter was granted the Octavio Paz Award for maintaining Honor Chapter status each year  during the 2013-16 triennium.  Drs. Carmen Grace and Susan Divine of Hispanic Studies are Nu Zeta’s chapter advisers, and along with past student chapter president Olivia Ghiz, they are greatly responsible for these national awards.

Dr. Raúl Carrillo Arciniega Receives Literary Award for Latest Novel

For his latest novel Tennessee River, Professor Raúl Carrillo Arciniega has been granted the Premio Literario Estatal de Novela (State Literary Award for Novel) by the the Coordinación de Fomento Editorial del Instituto Sudcaliforniano de Cultura in Mexico.  Click here for additional details on all statewide and regional awardees of Baja California.

CofC and The Citadel Crown the 2014 S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year

On November 13 at 7pm the College of Charleston’s and The Citadel’s chapters of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, crowned their 10th annual S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year for 2014: Ashleigh Berrian of Meadow Glen Middle School in Lexington, S.C.

All three finalists were recognized with award plaques during a ceremony in the Greater Issues Room of Mark Clark Hall at The Citadel.  The two contest runners-up were Adriana Alvarez of A.C. Flora High School in Columbia, S.C and Jessica Fuentes of Dutchman Creek Middle School in Rock Hill, S.C.  Dr. Virgil Alfaro presented the 2014 S.C. Spanish Teacher of the Year with a check for $500, and all three finalists enjoyed lodging and breakfast at the Francis Marion Hotel.

CofC’s and The Citadel’s Chapters of Sigma Delta Pi Launch 10th Annual Statewide Contest

The College of Charleston’s and The Citadel’s chapters of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, are proud to announce their 10th annual South Carolina Spanish Teacher of the Year Award for 2014. The three finalists will be recognized and the awardee announced during a ceremony on Thursday, November 13, 2014 at 7:00pm in the Greater Issues Room of Mark Clark Hall at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.  The winner will receive $500 courtesy of D. Virgil Alfaro, III, M.D. ’84 .
