Land, Body, History: Vectors of Knowledge from Global Black Feminist Perspectives

The Land, Body, History series explores the intersections of gender, race, identity, socio-historical, and systemic oppression within the Professional portraits of four Black women contributing to the Land, Body, History Seriesreparative framework of global Black feminism. La Vaughn Belle’s exhibit at the Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art inspired the creation of a more extensive series that delves into the ideas she manifests in her artwork–highlighting the interconnectedness of a person, a people, with their land–sharing in struggles, resilience, and perseverance.

Centering the series on marginalized voices, we go on to examine such layered and nuanced topics as the Haitian diaspora and female conjuring as a Black feminist spiritual practice, the international route of cuisine influenced by socio-political dynamics, and reclaiming and reshaping the narrative of life on a Southern Sea Island.
