Theatre 99

I had never seen a live comedy performance in my life until a few weeks ago on March 29th where I gladly remedied that. Older brother in tow, we saw the Improve Riot show at Theatre 99.  I had been wanting to attend one of their shows for a while, and was not disappointed at all. Beforehand I was worried that they might not be very funny to me or too crude.  About ten minutes into the show they had me laughing and I didn’t stop for the rest of the night. They gave each segment just the right amount of time so it didn’t become boring and kept it varied. I also liked how it was varied and how they involved the audience in ways I’ve never seen, like using their texts as a source of dialogue. The speed that they could come up with these scenarios and script was impressive and kept me entertained all evening.

The show targets mostly towards those in college up to mid-thirties I would say, and you can see it everywhere. First of all, they are located on the top floor of a building and you need to go around the side to get in, already a deterrent for the older crowds. Next their humor is somewhat clean, but you still probably wouldn’t want to be there with your elders and definitely not with kids. Another factor and also another source of income for them is the bar. You’re welcome to buy a drink and come back to your seat with its cupholder before, during intermission, and after the show. Marketing-wise, I think at this point they can put a lot of trust into word of mouth with only a bit of social media. This makes it feel more like an in-crowd type of thing and would get the attention of the somewhat younger crowd. Overall, it is a great experience to include in a group night out and I would recommend it.
