Kudos to all the students in my course, “Imaging Warfare in the Ancient World.” In imaging Caesar’s Gallic War they produced some stunning and highly imaginative work, including a BuzzFeed-style news site, WWII-inspired recruitment posters, a Fox News-type segment (complete with interviews & commercials!), to note a few examples.

Thanks to Dr. Matt Roller for inviting me to talk at this prestigious venue about my current research. The JHU Classics lecture series has hosted some of the most prominent scholars in ancient studies. I am humbled to be included in this roster. 

I would like to extend thanks to all my panelist, their hard work in realizing “Violent Conflences” at the recent SECAC conference in Pittsburgh. Acknowledgments go out to Dr. Kris Belden-Adams from the University of Mississippi and my colleagues at the College of Charleston , Drs. Marrian Mazzone and Mary Beth Heston.

The aerial drone surveys for the ongoing research on the Roman forts in eastern Transylvania continued this summer, producing amazing and valuable imagery. My thanks to the Brasov History Museum and the Romanian Ministry of Culture for their partnership in this endeavor.

The course examines the visual history of war from the Early Bronze Age through the Roman Empire. Students will consider the varied strategies for representing warfare in the ancient world, including those employed by the Sumerians, Hittites, Egyptians, Mycenaeans, Greeks, and Romans.

The Archaeological Institute of America’s 116th Annual Conference was a great success. Related our fantastic experience with “Silencing Homer” to the AIA Societies Board, presented a poster on latest findings in Dacia, and chaired a session on Ostia. 

ARTH 214 covers Greek art, architecture, and archaeology from the Late Neolithic Period through the Late Hellenistic Era.
