Faculty Lecture Series: Drug Discovery in Action

You’re invited to join Tim Barker, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry, for a Faculty Lecture Series titled Drug Discovery in Action: Preparing New Molecules with a Purpose.

Details: Enjoy a discussion on how organic chemists pursue new drug discoveries and the synthesis of new organic molecules and learn about chemical synthesis, medicinal chemistry, and interpreting the organic hieroglyphics that are used to describe molecules. Dr. Barker will also explain how his lab has been developing inhibitors aimed at new treatments for depression and related medical conditions.

The Lonon Foundation is Looking for Student Volunteers!

The Lonon Foundation is a local nonprofit that helps children affected by a caregiver’s cancer diagnosis. They put on FREE monthly UPLIFT events that are either virtual or in-person to bring families together and help children cope. Volunteers assist in the set-up/breakdown of the events, prepare care packages for families, engage with children, and spread awareness.

  • The Lonon Foundation is an Honors Engaged community partner
  • Potential for a future internship
  • Get event planning, child work, and communication experience

Great Fit For: Honors students studying psychology, education, public health, communications, or that are pre-med.

Scheduling Details: Volunteers are able to sign up for events that work best for their schedule. There is at least one UPLIFT event each month and volunteer work days scheduled throughout the semester.

Great Fit For: The event is intentionally curated for South Carolinians 18-30 years old (we love all our community members, but it’s important we create spaces and opportunities for our young leaders).

Call for Student Abstracts: Present your Research at the Tri-County Health Symposium

Are you a student passionate about health equity and disparities? Submit your poster presentation for the Tri-county Health Symposium and share your research on health issues in Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester counties.

The Opportunity: This symposium is an excellent platform for students to present their academic work, connect with health professionals, and contribute to critical discussions on health equity and disparities. The College is hosting it’s second-annual Signature Industry Event—an intimate, high-impact networking opportunity—on October 29, and representatives from a variety of local and international organizations will be in attendance.

The Event: An intimate networking opportunity where select students will be able to connect directly with employers and discuss internships and jobs in a more focused, exclusive environment beyond what you’d find at a traditional job fair.

How to Participate: Accept your invitation through Handshake, which will then allow you to register for a required a required prep session with a Career Center career professional who’ll help you prepare for this event (and others like it) by working with you to enhance your networking skills. The deadline to apply is September 20, or until registration has reached capacity.

Free tickets to the Gibbes Distinguished Lecture Series

The Honors College has a limited number of free tickets for Honors students to attend the Gibbes Museum of Art’s annual Distinguished Lecture Series featuring filmmaker Spike Lee.

The speaker: Spike Lee is an Academy Award-winning filmmaker and respected art collector. This talk comes on the heels of the auteur’s recent exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum Spike Lee: Creative Sources, which offered a rare glimpse into Lee’s personal collection of art and inspiration. Audience members can expect to learn more about the influence of the visual arts on the filmmaker and, in turn, his influence on visual art and culture.

Become an Honors Ambassador and help recruit the next class of Honors students!

The Honors College is looking for Honors Ambassadors to help us recruit and welcome the Honors College Class of 2029!

What does an Ambassador do? You’ll help the Honors College admissions team with recruitment events, campus visits, various recruitment tasks, and communication with prospective students.

Benefits: Help potential new Honors students determine if CofC is the best fit for them. Prospective students and families love to hear from current students directly, so we truly value each and every one of our ambassadors as they all showcase all the diverse interests our students have.
