Honors College Academic Standards: Class of 2026

For students who entered the Honors College as freshmen in the fall of 2022, the following academic standards apply.

FIRST-YEAR STUDENT

Good Standing

To remain in good standing at the end of their first academic year, all Honors Scholars must:

  • Successfully complete HONS 100, HONS 103A, HONS 103B, and HONS 110.
  • Successfully complete at least one Foundations course.
  • Successfully complete at least 24 credit hours, to include at least 10 HONS credits.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Not commit a Class I or Class II Honor Code violation.
  • Not commit a conduct violation resulting in the sanction of suspension or expulsion.

At Risk Notification

Students who meet one or more of the following criteria will be notified at the end of their second semester that they are at risk of being placed on advising probation:

  • Failed to complete at least one Foundations course.
  • Failed to complete HONS 110: Honors Academic Writing.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA between 2.61 and 2.99.

The purpose of the at-risk notification is to help students take steps to rectify the identified issue(s) and remain in good standing by the end of the academic year (i.e., the end of the summer semester). Students may take summer courses to raise their GPA. Be aware that the Honors College does not typically offer HONS 110: Academic Writing or Foundations courses during the summer semester.

Advising Probation

Students who meet one or more of the following criteria at the end of the academic year (i.e., the end of the summer semester) will formally be placed on advising probation for the following year:

  • Failure to complete at least one Foundations course.
  • Failure to complete HONS 110: Honors Academic Writing.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA between 2.61 and 2.99.

The student will be notified of their probationary status by August 15. They must schedule an individual advising appointment with their honors advisor by September 15 to develop a plan to return to good standing by the end of their fourth semester. Probation may include the loss of Honors priority registration. The student must return to good standing by the end of their second academic year to be removed from advising probation.

Removal from the Honors College

At the end of their second semester, any student who meets one or more of the following criteria will be transitioned out of the Honors College into the campus-wide curriculum:

  • Failure to complete HONS 100, HONS 103A, or HONS 103B.
  • Completed fewer than 24 credit hours during their freshman year.
  • A cumulative GPA of less than 2.6.
  • Committed a Class I or Class II Honors Code violation.
  • Committed a conduct violation resulting in sanction of suspension or expulsion.

The Appeal Process

Students may use the Honors College appeal form to contest their removal from the Honors College.


SECOND-YEAR STUDENT

Good Standing

To remain in good standing at the end of their second academic year, all Honors Scholars must:

  • Successfully complete at least one Colloquia course or Advanced Studies course.
  • Make progress toward the Quantitative Literacy requirement (i.e., take at least the prerequisite for HONS 216, HONS 217, or MATH 120).
  • Successfully complete at least 24 credit hours during their sophomore year.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.2.
  • Not commit a Class I or Class II Honor Code violation.
  • Not commit a conduct violation resulting in the sanction of suspension or expulsion.

At Risk Notification

Students who meet one or more of the following criteria will be notified at the end of their fourth semester that they are at risk of being placed on advising probation:

  • Maintain a cumulative GPA between 3.01 and 3.19.
  • Failure to complete at least one Colloquia course or Advanced Studies course.
  • Will have to enroll in more than 9 remaining HONS credits to complete the Honors requirements.

They must schedule an individual advising appointment with their honors advisor by September 15 to develop a plan to return to good standing by the end of their sixth semester. Probation may include the loss of priority registration. The student must return to good standing by the end of their third academic year to be removed from advising probation.

Removal from the Honors College

At the end of their fourth semester, any student who meets one or more of the following criteria will be transitioned out of the Honors College into the campus-wide curriculum:

  • Failure to return to good standing following a year of Honors advising probation.
  • Failure to complete one honors course during their sophomore year.
  • Failure to make progress toward the Quantitative Literacy requirement (i.e., take at least the prerequisite for HONS 216, HONS 217, or MATH 120).
  • Earned fewer than 24 credit hours during their sophomore year.
  • A cumulative GPA of less than 3.0.
  • Committed a Class I or Class II Honors Code violation.
  • Committed a conduct violation resulting in sanction of suspension or expulsion.

The Appeal Process

Students may use the Honors College appeal form to contest their removal from the Honors College.

 

THIRD-YEAR STUDENT

Good Standing

To remain in good standing at the end of their third academic year, all Honors Scholars must:

  • Successfully complete at least 16 total HONS credits and at least one Honors Colloquia course.
  • Successfully complete the Honors Quantitative Literacy requirement.
  • Successfully complete at least 24 credit hours during their junior year.
  • Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.3.
  • Not commit a Class I or Class II Honor Code violation.
  • Not commit a conduct violation resulting in the sanction of suspension or expulsion.

Advising Probation

There is no advising probation for students entering their fourth year in the Honors College. Students who are deemed not in good standing at the end their third year are considered for removal from the Honors College.

Removal from the Honors College

At the end of their sixth semester, any student who is not in good standing shall have their curricular progress reviewed by the Honors College. If it is determined that the student cannot realistically complete the Honors College requirements by the time they graduate, they will be transitioned out of the Honors College into the campus-wide curriculum.

Additionally, any student who meets one or more of the following criteria at the end of their sixth semester will be transitioned out of the Honors College into the campus-wide curriculum:

  • Failure to return to good standing following a year of Honors advising probation.
  • Committed a Class I or Class II Honors Code violation.
  • Committed a conduct violation resulting in sanction of suspension or expulsion.
