The 19th amendment granted women the right to vote 100 years ago, but Black women were excluded from the suffragist movement. Dr. Slater, who is also the director of the Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World Program, discusses prominent South Carolina suffragettes while highlighting this, “historical legacy that can’t be ignored because it’s inconvenient.”
