The history department is delighted to welcome Dr. Julie Weise of the University of Oregon to campus on January 20. She will be presenting research from her new book, Corazón de Dixie: Mexicanos in the U.S. South since 1910 (UNC Press, 2015). This innovative study is the first to place the increasingly visible Latino population across the south in a more comprehensive historical context. Through an examination of Mexicans and Mexican-Americans in settings as diverse as New Orleans, rural Georgia, and the suburbs of Charlotte, Weise sheds light on how they both adapted to and shaped the communities around them. Her talk will appeal to anyone interested in immigration, southern history, and twentieth-century U.S. history more generally. Before becoming a history professor, Weise helped shape immigration policy through work for the Mexican government and with several agencies in the United States. Her current project explores connections between the diverse experiences of different immigrants groups in the post-WWII era.
