Upcoming book-an historic tour of SC’s courthouses

Due out in spring 2011 is South Carolina’s Courthouses: An Illustrated History will showcase 48 courthouses with a forward by Chief Justice Jean Hoefer Toal . Co-author and editor, Rita Williams Livingston, an adjunct professor of history at the College of Charleston states “We took it upon ourselves to go and research each county and find out how many courthouses they’ve had, where they were located and who built them, and what they looked like.”  “The Court houses started out as just that. After the Civil War the courthouse evolved into the central governmental unit of the county. Today Counties are separating courts from other governmental functions. It’s almost like we’re coming full circle. ”
The book also covers architect Robert Mills later known for his role in designing the Washington Monument.
